The University of Minnesota has been cultivating multimillionaire alumnus T. Denny Sanford for some time to help finance upgrades in its athletics facilities.

For those wondering whether a gift from Sanford is forthcoming for a long-sought basketball practice facility, they probably can stop wondering.

"I'm not a big basketball guy," Sanford said Tuesday evening, March 26, from Scottsdale, Ariz., where he resides in the winter. "I think that's highly unlikely."

"They feel they need a (football) practice facility for recruiting purposes," he said. "It's my alma mater and I'm darn proud of it, and I'll help out in some way, shape or form."

Longtime Gophers booster Dick Ames said he plans to help finance a Gophers basketball practice facility. Ames, who owns Ames Construction in Burnsville, attends most Gophers men's basketball home games. He said he did not help with a buyout of Smith's contract.

That really sucks, I remember him saying he wanted to die broke, and he is 77, so what am I missing here. At least he is gonna help with the new football practice facility.

Why is this surprise to everyone? He said the exact same thing a few months ago.

But many of you patients are Denny. Pony up.

You bought the clinic in Alex and we're all Gopher Basketball fans.

Classic Minnesota fans. You guys focus only on the negative parts in that blurb (i.e. T. Denny not financing a basketball facility). More positive in there than negative:

1. T. Denny will help finance a football facility
2. Dick Ames will help finance a basketball facility

Am I missing something here? Is what Charley said bad news? Also, fyi, he doesn't own Sanford Health. Its a nonprofit that was renamed after him for donating $400M, he doesn't own the company. He actually makes or made his money from credit cards with 70% interest rates that they give to people with crappy credit.

I was wondering the same thing? Plenty of people will help with the bb facility and the news that Dick Ames is going to help with it is GREAT NEWS, I'm VERY happy to know that T Denny's going to throw more money at the football situation. We simply can not let either of these drop down to where they were, OR ARE, ever again.
