"I know I'm not the most popular guy in town now," the Gophers men's basketball coach said this week. "But I'm not trying to win a popularity contest."

"It's like during the game, someone said to me, 'Coach, didn't you hear what they were saying?' " Smith said.

"To be honest with you, I really can't 'hear.' That's the first thing you learn as a coach -- if you don't, you won't make it in this business. It's simple as that. I didn't last in this business 39 years listening to anything other than my inner thoughts.

"Don't get me wrong -- I listen to my team. You don't blow (losses) off. You certainly go back and watch as much film as you can, you burn the midnight oil, you try different things with the team, you bring in different people to talk to them, you do everything possible you can."
