"Gophers 6-6 basketball sophomore Wally Ellenson, 19, who won a gold medal in the high jump at the Pan American junior championships this summer, figures he needs to reach 7 feet 6 to earn a berth on the 2016 U.S. Olympic track and field team. Hi best is 7-2 1/2.
Ellenson said his high jumping in track translates well to the basketball court.
"The only difference is that with the high jump, I do a back flip," he said. "But it does help with reverse dunks."
It could be interesting if the basketball team tries to move Ellenson to a track scholarship in order to free up another basketball tender.
Ellenson's brother, 6-10 Rice Lake (Wis.) High junior Henry Ellenson, is getting lots of basketball interest from Iowa and Iowa State as well as Minnesota."
