"Gophers interim football coach Jeff Horton got a 90-minute interview for the permanent job Wednesday from Joel Maturi and his search staff."

Courtesy interview, before they make the hire. I believe they must be really close.

Thanks again Coach Horton!

We're actually still 2 weeks away from the announcement. Maturi flys to San Deigo to interview Brady Hoke 2 weeks ago. Then Bruininks tells Gopher Fund Supporters at the U of M basketball game that, "we've got our man". Brady Hoke's buyout drops by $500,000 after Dec. 15th. The San Deigo papers are already blasting Hoke for leaving SDSU to go to Minnesota. The announcement will come Dec. 15 or 16. Hoke was an outstanding OC at Michigan. He turned the Ball State program around and he has lead SDSU to a very successful season. He's a great recruiter and he will turn the Gopher Program around as well. He would actually wait on the Michigan job if it were not destined for Harbaugh.

Thats about how I see it too.

Cocaine's a hell of a drug.

I agree...sort of....I think the $5M donation may have him rethinking things.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: that's a really stupid risk to take to save $500,000.

I'm not saying its the right thing to do or the smart thing to do. The tea leaves all just seem to indicate this as the most likely possibility.

Not really. IF Hoke has agreed to take the job and he'd back out on that to accept a better job what's to stop him from taking the other job even if it's announced that he was coming here? Contracts would probably not be signed by then anyway.

That "change of mind" does happen. Here we have had two former coaches that did just that, Holtz with Tulane and Mason with Georgia.

Totally agree. I've had one or two of those in my career, too. The only reason it lasted 90 minutes is that's how long it takes Maturi to do the bronze level Sudoku in yesterday's St. Paul paper. Jeff prolly thought Joel was taking notes.

I'm more concerned with the damage it would do to the recruiting class -- is that really worth $500,000?

If you want to be a serious program, you don't play these sort of cute games. If he is your guy, get it inked and be done with it.

Good point, don't know one way or the other.

If Hoke is indeed our guy, its stupid to wait until 12/15 for both parties. Aside from the risk of the deal heading south, it hurts both schools from a recruiting standpoint to have this drag out. Assuming its Hoke, Maturi should be on the phone with their AD right frackin' now to work out a deal. We offer SDSU $1.1MM instead of the $1MM buyout on 12/15 and it's a done deal. It's a nobrainer for them, too. If your GF is already sleeping around with other guys, do you hang onto her for another week just because you have dinner reservations for this Saturday???

There's a logical leap in your argument here. We don't know that they're actually going to wait until 12/15 to hire whoever they hire (Hoke or otherwise). If it is Hoke, I'd expect that by Monday Maturi has a conversation with the SDSU AD on negotiating down the buyout.

A very good point.

When you speak with authority

Hoke was a defensive asst coach at Michigan, not the OC.

I'd give the job to Hohensee before I'd give Horton a crack at being the head coach!

I'm all about fiscal responsibility.

What are the next two week's worth when it comes to recruiting? As I understand it, this is like open season on visits and what-not, right?

If it were up to me, I'm getting my guy on campus as soon as possible so he can get familiar with the program and get his butt out on the road.

With few exceptions, I don't trust what Brew left in the cupboard and I don't want the next coach to have any excuses.

This analogy made me LOL for some reason haha.

Answer: "Don't Print That." Question: "What do I say every time I look at Shooter's column?" /rim shot.

Hoke was not an "outstanding" coordinator at Michigan and the more I look at that 12-2 year, I get more and more underwhelmed at the teams they beat and the ones they lost to. They won 12 games in the MAC and they didn't play Bowling Green or Temple, two of the better teams in conference. They lost to Turner Gill's Buffalo team and then got crushed by Tulsa in a bowl game.

I'm not a Hoke fan, but that's just my $.02.

If so, why did Maturi also meet with Gray? I don't think it is necessarily that simple. They may also want to know if he would be interested in being an asst or his ability to handle transition.

As for all the talk concerning Hoke, who knows at this time! The thought Maturi is still doing interviews kinda says they do not have someone signed yet.

I know it may not be the greatest reason, but if it is Hoke, and they are waiting until after the 15th, it may simply be that they have spent enough on buyouts the past few years and are trying to save some money there. This is a university, not a major business.

It would be an insult to Horton if his interview took place after a new coach was selected.

It was a courtesy interview yes and I am sure Horton is a nice enough guy, but if Maturi hires him I will have to puke. It would just mean Matuir bought handsome cream from a traveling salesman again.

Maturi will have absolutely no respect from any Gopher fans as this is not what he promised when he canned Brewster. He may have promised too much, but clearly you don't go up to the podium and spout off outlandish statements if this would be the best you can do.

You would also prove Sid Hartman right and how would that make him look?

Would retaining Horton on the staff also trouble you?
