"(Kill) has turned every program around that he's ever been to," Harnish said. "There's a reason why he is where he is, and there's a reason why those (assistant) coaches are still with him -- because of the type of man he is. They're very loyal to him.
"He's a great coach, but he's even a better person."
Harnish, who was MVP of the Mid-American Conference in 2010, said Kill has no pretenses.
"He lives exactly the way he talks," he said. "He's a man of high integrity. The values are there -- hard work, perseverance, 'chip on our shoulder' and just do things the right way. (At Northern Illinois), he kept it pretty simple, the difference between right and wrong. And I think that's pretty well exemplified by his players on the field.
"It's a cultural change for a lot of guys, and it was at Northern when he came in. But once that culture was in place, we knew what the expectations were and just ran with it."
