Collegefootballnews.com came out with “College Football Bowl Games: Ranking All 39. How Good is Your Bowl?”

They put the Outback Bowl under “Best Bowl Games: Watch or Die.” It’s behind only the semifinals and the Rose Bowl.

4. Outback Bowl
Wednesday, January 1
1:00 ET, ESPN, Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, FL
Minnesota vs. Auburn
This is hoping or something good between two entertaining teams. Minnesota was fantastic as one of the big surprises of last year’s bowl season with a blowout of Georgia Tech in the Quick Lane – can PJ Fleck crank his team up for the big step up on the big New Year’s Day stage? This would be a much bigger win than beating Penn State. Auburn will have the juice after beating Alabama.”

For the “Best Bowl Games”:

For the start of the list:

That's an interesting opinion.

If memory serves, Penn State was ranked #4 or #5 when we beat them. Auburn is currently #12, I believe. Penn State win counted in B1G Conference standings.

I don't know if I'd say a win vs Auburn would be better than the Penn State win. But it would do more to lift the national reputation of the program, especially outside the midwest.

B1G vs. SEC Bowl games for 2019/20 (let me know if I missed any):

— Michigan vs. Alabama

— Minnesota vs. Auburn

— Indiana vs. Tennessee

I’m used to Gopher bowls showing up in the 30s on these lists under the heading of...if you are at the airport...snowed in...sick...and paralyzed...watch away. Another sign of the times!

Yes, I definitely think that the national status of the Gopher program will skyrocket with a win over Auburn. There will be a lot of eyeballs on the TV watching either Minnesota v. Auburn OR Michigan v. Alabama (both games kick-off at the same time). Football fans will check in on both games to see how they are going and this will provide them with validation that the Gopher program is a mirage, or pause for thought that Minnesota is becoming a big time program.

I think the overall perception of the Gopher program is that we have a ways to go... which is true in some ways, but a great season with a bowl win over a good Auburn team will flip the switch in a bunch of High School kids minds that it is possible to win at the biggest stage as a Gopher.

Having 2 big wins would be momentous for the program.

10-3 with one big win would be a nice season. But I could understand why outsiders might regard that as something of a fluke.

11-2 with two big wins? That would make it clear to everybody that the Gophers are on the rise.

Yeah it would dismiss the one off sort of sense that might be out there, particularly reaching outside the B1G to do it.

Would impress folks outside the B1G as well IMO.

ESPN has a similar article. Write up on the Outback Bowl made me laugh.

7. Outback Bowl
Minnesota vs. Auburn
Jan. 1, 1 p.m., ESPN/ESPN App
Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, Florida
P.J. Fleck's mantra is "row the boat." Minnesota is playing at Raymond James Stadium. Raymond James Stadium has a giant pirate ship adjacent to the field. That can't be a coincidence. If this game doesn't end with Fleck swinging on a rope from the ship's mast like Sloth in "Goonies," we're going to be disappointed.

I'm up for some Goonies action!
