How good can these guys be? Austin made a huge jump from Fr. to So. He does a lot of things well and became a good shooter. I really like his game. To me Andre strikes me as a guy who can become an elite college G. Are my glasses too rose colored or can these guys be special?

Ceiling?

I think Dre could end up with a chance at PG in the NBA. His TOs will likely go down significantly this year, making him a constant threat on both ends of the floor. He also has plenty of stamina and will get plenty of minutes even in Tubby's hockey style sub patterns. His positive attitude will win over teammates and enrage opponents and does not appear to take away from his focus and intensity.

Austin may not have the size and agility to sniff the biggest stage but will be pro player somewhere. With a looking shot, great pull up jumper, he can work off screens and just has a lot of spots on the floor where he can hit with a high percentage. I believe his accuracy will go a up a little bit each hear and will end up near the top of a couple of lists in the Gopher record books.

I think you are spot on.

Agree completely. Andre still reminds me a lot of Russell Westbrook in style of play and I see no reason he can't have a solid NBA career.

Austin I think has a good shot too though, he is a very good defender already and a good shooter and finisher. I could see him making it as a defensive specialist type, a lot will come down to his height though IMO with teams likely expecting him to guard some bigger two's and three's. Austin reminds me a lot of TayShaun, but shorter.

Russell Westbrook? Tayshaun Prince? Wow, I think those are some serious rose colored glasses.

I mean, Rodney Williams reminds me of Michael Jordan, except skinnier and not as good a player.

Austin is the enigma. There were times last year where he showed aggression offensively and looked really good. He shows flashes of getting to the rim off the bounce and through traffic, shows suprising athleticism at times, showed he can be very good in the catch and shoot mid range game, and showed nice outside stroke. He showed that he could be a very good 2 guard and 2nd or 3rd scoring option for a good team. But then there were stretches where he completely disappeared and was content to not take a shot for seemingly entire halfs. Other times his shot just left him. I think with added strength and maturity he can be a solid 2 that can average double figures for the next 2 years and play good perimeter D.

Dre can be a very good PG. He doesn't quite have elite athleticism or skill but he's still very quick and is skilled enough to get the job done. With an improved J and an aggressive mentality he can be one of the B10's best PGs as soon as next year. He also can really improve his playmaking next year with Rodney AND Trevor as finishers. If he can get into the lane teams will have to decide whether to help and leave those 2 open for easy dunks or to give Dre paths to the lane. Of course this is dependent on his and Austin's (and Welch/Oto/Coleman) ability to make teams respect the outside shot or they'll just pack the lane and dare us to shoot them out of it

They're examples. Would you rather have someone compare Dre to a guy like Randy Foye that nobody watches so nobody understands the reference?

And for Dre to make it in the NBA he'll have to become a good outside shooter. He may be athletic enough to play in the NBA but he's not THAT athletic that he can get by without being able to hit open shots (aka Telfair)

Who is Telfair??? I think you must mean LeBron James? ;)

He hits open shots already. He shot 38% from 3 pt line last year as a frosh. Not bad. He will have to get better at finishing in traffic and, of course, reduce the turnovers while increasing the assists.

Actually, I do like that comparison, I could see him as that type of player down the line. Not a pure point ever, but good enough to be a lead guard on a high caliber, deep tourney run type team. I remember loving Foye when we drafted him on the Wolves.

Austin Hollins is an interesting kid, no doubt. Like, he can be so smooth out there, like you said, getting into the lane aggressively, but then he'll definitely disappear in stretches. I'd like to see him more consistent going into his third year now. If he's providing consistent 3rd, or 4th scorer production, that will bode well for this team.

I think dre needs to work on his left hand

I really hope Andre plays a ton next year. Outside of foul trouble, I see no reason why he can't play 35 minutes a game. Mav for a few minutes in the first half and a few in the second.

Outside of his physicality, I don't think there is one thing that Austin is sub-par at. Hopefully he becomes a guy that cannot be left open because he will knock down the open shot.

Andre can't hit open shots? That's an odd assessment.

I'm talking about on the NBA level with the NBA 3. He was a decent, streaky shooter as a frosh but not a lights out one. Because he's not all that big and has very good but not quite great athleticism he will really need to excel as a shooter to make it in the league. Remember that PG is now a position filled with elite athletes and many who are in the 6'2-6'4" range so the competition level is very high these days, especially for a guy that is a pure pg and not a combo guard size wise

"Ceiling for the Hollins' "

I don't know what it is, it's over my head.

If he ends up like Foye I would say everyone would be extremely happy.

I'll take it...Foye was a great college player.

And he's a solid pro. But yeah, if Hollins is good enough to become a top 10 pick, I think we have nothing to worry about the next two or three years.

I can't believe that you guys aren't understanding what a comparison is. Its not saying 'Dre will be as good as Randy Foye', its saying he has similar qualities to his game which is why you compare a player to someone everyone already knows. Comparing Dre to say Janero Pargo is not useful because many people either don't know who Pargo is or can't remember how he plays so you compare him to a guy that everyone knows and can say 'oh yea I see how Dre's game is similar to that guy'. IT IS NOT SAYING HE WILL END UP AS GOOD AS THE PLAYER HE IS BEING COMPARED TOO!!!!! Comparing him to Foy is not saying he'll be a lottery pick who will start in the NBA for multiple years, just that he plays somewhat similar to him. Same reason why every undersized PF is compared to Barkley and not Gary Trent.

From my experience, you can say this as many times as you want, many people will still not understand. Very complicated concept (sarcasm).

For the record, I got exactly what you meant oleboy lol. I'm just dreaming of Dre becoming a Foye player for us, as far as style AND quality :)

You can always count on gopherbadgeman to make some stupid comment if you compare the style of one of our players to a quality NBA player. It's a very difficult concept for some to understand. Comparing style doesn't = comparing ability???? I don't get it.
