per Dennis Dodd:

It tortures my soul that Charlie Strong's job security is a talking point this week. The man has done everything the right way at Texas ... except win.

No matter what your knee-jerk reaction is, Texas' performance Saturday at Notre Dame cannot be ignored. The Horns were dominated in just about every way possible. They were manhandled up front. Notre Dame's skill athletes were better. The talent gap in quarterbacks was astounding.

Notre Dame already is spending mega-millions to remodel its legendary stadium. A small consolation for Texas: There are worse venues to get run out of.

After a 38-3 trouncing, you wonder where Strong and Texas are headed. It's no surprise they lost. Notre Dame is better and the Horns are still rebuilding.

The surprise was the dearth of encouraging signs.

Texas was scorched by a quarterback making his second career start (Malik Zaire). Tyrone Swoopes, making his 12th start, threw for less than 100 yards.

Strong this week called out the offense and the offensive coordinator.

“We can't go through another season of bad offense,” he told reporters.

Texas has scored a total of 20 points the last three games, averaging 3.1 yards per play. Tailback Jonathon Gray got eight touches against ND. Strong said he should be getting 15 to 25.

Strong went from having to "evaluate" offensive coordinator Shawn Watson earlier in the week to stripping him of play calling duties on Tuesday.

Suddenly, Saturday's home opener against Rice might be the biggest of the Strong era. For Strong.

It would be a stretch to suggest that Strong is in trouble one game into his second season, but ‘tis the season.

Go Gophers!!

I watched quite a bit of the ND-Texas game and it's telling that the underclassmen were the most impressive players for Texas. Mack Brown got far too comfortable and didn't recruit or develop the players properly...letting TCU, Baylor and A&M catch up and pass them up. Brown picking Tyrone Swoopes over J.T. Barrett (who was set on Texas..if they offered he was going there) really set that program back. They need a complete rebuild and they won't see real results until probably late in Strong's 3rd year or 4th year.

If anything I could see Strong leaving Texas for Miami if Golden continues to struggle. Much better fit for him with the ties he has in Florida.

Just remember that it took Kill two years of getting trounced to clear Tim Brewster's stench out of here. It won't take any less than that down in Austin.

I would say that Kill had a tougher challenge although the expectations of success were lower for him (of course, the money was as well). He not only had to recruit players who were a better fit for his system. He had to go to other geographical areas to recruit players to come to a program without much reputation located in one of the coldest areas of the country that is also fairly remote for a metropolitan area. UT is a premier program with an impressive history located within one of the very best football recruiting areas of the USA.

so yer telling us Jerry is headed to TX. it's probably in his contract as his dream job.

With the recruiting classes they are bringing in, I don't think it will take long for them to be very good.

I've said it for years - their recruiting strategy fizzled out eventually, as it was destined to. Mack more or less had his choice of in-state players, but the problem was that he was handing out offers and securing commits for half of his class (or more) a year before signing day. Look at the 2010 class - he had 19 (!) commits by March 20, 2009, just less than a year before signing day. Sure, some of those guys will end up being good or even great, but think how much people change between their 17th and 18th birthdays - even elite athletes. That 2010 class should've been the backbone of their 2013-2014 teams, and I don't have the time or inclination to look, but I would venture that a great deal of that class washed out early or never amounted to much. Getting early commits works for a relatively small portion of your class, but they were doing it with half of their classes or more, and their successors are now reaping what they sowed.

Also not going to look for it, but I recently heard that their next class is ranked 6th.

6th in the state of Texas. There are 5 Texas schools that have a higher rated class.

The natives are restless, Coach Strong is PR adverse. This could cost not only Strong his job, but also the AD Patterson. Patterson is a corporate guy who is all about revenue streams. He, Patterson has limited coaches salaries, ended the Texas AM game, and looked at a game in Dubai. He is tone deaf. If anyone has to go, it would be Patterson. It would be a huge vote of confidence for Coach Strong. Texas is playing ugly football. You know it when you see it and man its ugly.

Tech, A&M, Baylor, TCU and ?. Houston?

As Notre Dame stomped on Texas, anyone else here recall that the Gophers had booked a home and home with Texas and Texas backed out of it so they could play Notre Dame? I hope they are thoroughly enjoying their decision now. It is soooooo easy to root against them with the way they bullied the Big 12.

They also show 9 commits. I would guess as they get more commits their ranking will improve, as they did have a top 10 ranked class in 2015.

Texas will be fine when he player compensation rodeo begins.

We all know it was actually a good move for them. They would have lost 48-0 if they had played us instead of Notre Dame. ;)

Nah. I would assume Shaka can coach both teams if they can just keep him out of the local strip club...

That would have been awesome.

On a side note: Texas has not been the same since they lost Brewster as a positional coach.

Baylor probably is able to pay the players more than UT. Why else would anyone voluntarily live in Waco?
