CBS Sports Bowl Projections: Gophers vs Rice in Heart of Dallas Bowl

Rice is my second favorite team next to the Gophers, and the Gophers better hope that they don't play Rice. One of the more underrated teams in the country right there.

Go Gophers!!
I am going to that one, if that is the deal.

I don't want to get greedy.....but I'd like to see us make the Gator Bowl.

Not trying to sound absolutely crazy, but if the Gophers finish conference play 2-2, and Iowa/Nebraska lose the games they are underdogs in, we could end up playing either Georgia/Florida in the bowl game (SEC #8). A small chance, but it's there.

Is that the Gator Bowl? I didn't realize the SEC was the other end of that bowl. That makes me even more hungry for it.

I am interested to see just how many Big Ten games the Gophers can win but its to early for bowl talk to me. I am still curious just how good this team is they could still win 3 more games this year but we also could go winless I am just not sure.

Why does the 7th ranked B1G team get a New Years Day game while the 6th ranked gets a December 27th game?

The Heart of Dallas Bowl is by no means a traditional "New Year's Day bowl game" when it comes to level of prestige - it was started four years ago just to give ESPN another game to broadcast on its networks.

The only appeal the game has for me is that it is played in the Cotton Bowl, but because this year it would be against an opponent from the watered-down Conference USA, I'd like to avoid it if possible....though it still ranks ahead of Christmas in Detroit.

Yeah. Even if Rice is underrated, it doesn't move the needle from a national viewing audience (# of eyes on the Gophers), nor locally (who here really knows much about Rice). It's in a decent location, but by no means better than any on the list above it. Texas is good for recruiting, I suppose, and Dallas >>> Detroit in December. But we should be aiming for FL for once, if nothing else for the level/prestige of the competition..

It sure is fun to have 4 games left, and be playing to decide which bowl, and not whether or not we get one. The last time remember that happening was 2008. Hope we get a different outcome this time around.

My guess is they would almost have to win out to get a Jan 1 bowl game other than the Heart of Dallas game, if conference standings are even, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, or Nebraska would probably get the better game in the event of a tie because of perception.

I'd like this very much since I'd have a free place to crash.

That would be amazing. I am trying to contain my optimism however. I would like to see the NW/NEB game and obviously......the MN/INDY game before I determine who this team can play with. A good rushing attack can keep us in every game if it works. If saturday was a preview of things to come.....we will be fine for a few years at least. Here's hoping for the Gator Bowl.
