It doesn't come as much of a surprise, but Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones made a long-awaited decision about his future official on Wednesday.

Ohio State's game against Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl will be Jones' last in an Ohio State uniform as he's decided to enter the 2016 NFL Draft.

Just about everybody expected Jones to leave Ohio State following the 2015 season, though there was some speculation he may do so as a fifth-year graduate transfer to get a full season in as a starter at another program before going to the NFL. According to Jones, that wasn't an option, as he told reporters he'd "come back [to Ohio State] and sit another year before I'd transfer somewhere else."

Jones didn't have a magnificent season for the Buckeyes. He began the year as the team's starting quarterback, winning an offseason battle with J.T. Barrett, but threw for 1,460 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions, and eventually lost the starting gig to Barrett.

Those numbers pale in comparison to the stats he put up in an epic three-game run en route to a national title last season, in which Jones totaled six touchdowns to two picks.

Go Gophers!!

Tops. Be interesting to hear how he scores on the Wonderlic test.

Let's face it, at the end of the day, "We ain't come here to play SCHOOL!"

He should have left after last year. He really should transfer and try to boost his stock. I'll be surprised if someone takes him before the 5th or 6th round.

I'd like to see him playing for Bruce Arians, with that big arm he'd fit right in when Carson Palmer is done.

No way. Go straight to the league, and develope on the practice squad.

And make 100k/year with the chance of never making a NFL roster? Or go somewhere else, have a big year, get drafted in the first three rounds and make a few million/year on a NFL roster.

I'm sure he can beat Dan Marino's 13. The wonderlic has nothing to do with being able to play football.

It was a different league back then, no doubt about it. When you can spin it like Marino, and have the Mark's brothers (Clayton and Duper) to throw it to, you can hide a lot of flaws. The Wonderlic may not have much to do with playing football, but it's a probably a pretty good barometer for at least the QB position. The position is light years different, the defenses more complex, than it was in Marino's day. I have no clue whether or not C. Jones can make it in the league or not. I guess we'll see soon enough.

Ordinarily I would agree with you (as a Cardinals season tix holder), but the Cardinals took on a similar project or development QB a few years ago that just didn't pan out. They picked up big Logan Thomas, QB from Va Tech, in the 4th round to groom behind Palmer. I was excited as heck. Big, strong, big arm, fairly mobile. After a year or so, he just didn't work out, they waived him after training camp this year, Dolphins picked him up, waived him, picked him back up, and put him on the practice squad. And Thomas played a lot more football at Va Tech than Jones has at OSU.

Speaking of the Cardinals and backup QB's. It went by with little or no fanfare but early in the season, the Cardinals picked up Matt Barkley from the Eagles for a conditional 6th or 7th round pick. I wonder if BA sees something in Barkley that nobody else does?

So there's no risk going to another school and he is guaranteed to be drafted? Nope, it could go worse than coming back to Ohio State which also seemed like a good idea. Forgo the middle man (college), get NFL training.

He should have declared last year like Maxx did IMHO.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was picked by the 3rd round. A lot will depend on interviews. Kid has a big-time arm and some athletic ability. Could be a boom-or-bust guy.

NFL Draft Scout at CBS Sports has him as a 2nd or 3rd rounder with questions about his approach holding him back.

I've seen a lot of 2nd or 3rd round grades on him too. He's incredibly athletically talented and that is probably why someone will take a chance on him.

On the other hand, I would be very disappointed if my NFL franchise (Vikings) selected him in the 3rd round. Too many questions in my mind to justify the opportunity cost. There are still some very good players to select in the 3rd round, that will be consistent contributors.

The Vikes would be really stupid to spend anything more than a developmental pick (6th-7th round) on a QB anytime in the next 3-5 years given that Bridgewater just turned 23 and will hopefully be under center for the next 12 years at least.

I agree assuming they believe Teddy, there's no reason to take a qb in the first five rounds. Sign a vet to be the back up, and you can even find decent third stringers in rookie free agency and put them on the practice squad. Use the picks to upgrade needs on the offensive line, the secondary and build some better WR depth. Probably use another linebacker too for the rotation

Cardale will be the MVP of the IFL in 2018. You saw it here first

I would agree except the Vikings don't have a viable backup. Shaun Hill was at one time but not anymore. Nothing wrong with spending a 4th or 5th round on a QB who could be a good backup with the potential to be a starter down the road. It only takes one play to knock Teddy out.

Edit: However, I definitely don't want it to be Cardale Jones.

That's what you use for your 3rd-stringer. Your backup has to be a serviceable veteran. You can't be put in a situation where you're one play away from having Taylor Heinicke as your full-time QB.

You also have to pay 3-5 million/yr for a veteran backup QB that might not see a snap. Is Teddy a franchise QB? I don't know yet. He's had an up and down year. Where would Washington be this year if they didn't spend a 4th round pick on Cousins after already spending their top pick on RGIII?

I just meant I wouldn't want him for my franchise, in general, that high. Regardless of the franchise I cheered for. I think some foolish team will take him in the 3rd round though. I could see the Ravens, Browns, Cowboys, all taking him that high.

Why is this always the comp with black QBs?

Lame. I didn't hear anyone comping Bridgewater with Russell. Or Winston. Or RG3. And I doubt we'll hear that with Barrett. The parallels between Russell and Jones seem obvious, however: very big guy, huge arm, moderately athletic. Extremely intriguing to an NFL coach who fancies himself a QB guru. Ryan Leaf also strikes me as a similar comp.
