per Dennis Dodd:

Notre Dame has been losing ground for a while.

That conclusion has less to do with any criticism of its recruiting, talent or coaching; rather, it's referring to college football's evolving realization.

The sport has become bigger than what was once college football's flagship program. The implications, as you will see, are obvious. Start with a crying need for Notre Dame to join a conference sooner than later.

College football needed the clout of Notre Dame to from the old College Football Association in breaking away from the NCAA television monopoly in the 1980s. It needed Notre Dame to crown a legitimate champion when the Bowl Championship Series kicked off in 1998.

But by 2006, a conscious decision was made by the commissioners who ran the BCS to reduce Notre Dame's access from a top 12 finish to one in the top eight. They figured out that the BCS was more significant than Notre Dame's involvement in it. Special access began to erode.

But in a way, Notre Dame isn't in control of its future. The conferences basically rule the landscape with their major-bowl partnerships. Only the Big 12 doesn't play a conference championship game.In 2014, that extra game was the difference for Ohio State. The Buckeyes slipped into the top four on Pick ‘Em Day by clowning Wisconsin in the Big Ten title game. This year, Notre Dame's season will have been over for eight days when the selection committee picks the field on Dec. 6.

After 127 seasons and 1,234 games, the next 12 games in Season No. 128 may leave the most lasting impression for the Irish.

Go Gophers!!

NO. They figured out other teams played significantly tougher schedules / better quality of opponents and those teams needed to be recognized for such efforts and instead of recognizing a Notre Dame team having 3 wins over our Service Academies, a win over 1-11 Stanford, a win over 3-9 North Carolina, and a win over a 4-8 Michigan State.

No program in America is consistently more overrated than Notre Dame.

And yet, there they are at #11 in the preseason rankings.

I am so glad the Big Ten was in a strong enough position to not bow to more special treatment for the Irish the way the ACC did.

Let's trade out Rutgers for Notre Dame. I'll even give up Maryland and another school if I have to. :)

I used to be in the pro-Notre Dame to B1G camp. Count me out. You had your chance and instead spit upon the unwashed. Good luck.

I want them in still for hockey reasons mostly.

I think that if ND comes with their tail between their legs that the B1G would welcome them in. The longer it takes, the more bargaining chips will be on the conference side... From a purely conference standpoint the addition of ND and one other (Missouri? ) would be very good for the conference

One, they really don't need a conference. They have their own TV network. The problem they have is scheduling. They have a rivalry with Purdue, Michigan dropped the series. If they want to go it alone, they can. Putting on toe in the ACC won't last. It going to be all or nothing, and they don't like to be told what they should do. With 12 games certainly Purdue should be the pre season game. But they have Stanford, USC, but they also play U Mass, Temple, and Wake Forrest. That is where their problem lies. Give those and Virginia up. Schedule Va Tech, Penn State, Oklahoma and then they can say we played the toughest National Schedule. Until they do, Boise State has the same claim.

With the number of private schools in the ACC becoming a full member is the most natural fit.

AGREED. In 2016 they have Texas, Duke, Miami, FL, VA Tech, Michigan State, Stanford, and USC...........it appears to be a better schedule than 2015 (@ least on paper). Army, Navy, Temple, and Syracuse on as well.
Some of those aforementioned teams should be very good and will pose legitimate challenges for them.

Geographically they are in B1G territory. However, Notre Dame has always been first and foremost an East Coast Team. That is where the biggest concentration of ND fans is located. I'd like to see them in the B1G, but their fan base does not.

Trade Rutgers, Maryland and Penn State to the ACC for Notre Dame and the world would be perfect.

Dumb article considering a 0 or one loss notre dame team is essentially a lock for the playoff

Good thing they'll go 8-4 just like every year

Perhaps true. But their record this season has nothing to do with the premise of the article. The premise of the article is simply incorrect.

I was always under the impression Chicago was the epicenter of Notre Dame fans.

If you know many Notre Dame fans or if you ever visit their message boards, the DO NOT want to be a part of the B1G. The consensus that I have heard is that the ACC is where the fan base would rather be.

It is simple why. They wouldn't be able to dominate against any of the Big Ten schools.

Exactly. If Notre Dame joined the B1G right now it'd be at the very best only the 4th best football program, behind OSU, MSU, and Wisconsin, and that doesn't even account for the traditions at Michigan, Nebraska, and Penn State.

In the ACC it's basically FSU, with a touch of Clemson and Georgia Tech. Miami has been irrelevant for quite awhile now.

This is is a good point people don't often bring up.
Football wise they would be a pretty solid fit in the big ten. Geographically too. Culturally they are an old big east school.

If they ever had to join a conference they'd probably want a 22 team big ten that looked like this:
West
Nebraska
Iowa
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Illinois
Northwestern
Indiana
Purdue
Michigan
Michigan state
Ohio state

East
Pitt
Penn state
Syracuse
Uconn
Boston college
Miami
Rutgers
Maryland
North Carolina
Georgia tech
Virginia Tech

Basically the old big east and the big ten merged under one umbrella

But until something HUGE happens they won't move.

***disclaimer***
I don't think what I just suggested will ever happen.

Good...they're afraid of the Big Ten...knowing that playing a tough weekly Big Ten Conference schedule would really hurt them. The ND fans are living in a dream world for some reason. I mean look at it...Big Ten ... ACC...come on !!!!

I agree that they would fare better in the ACC which is probably the deep rooted reason why the fans want to be there instead. If you talk to them they act like they are an east coast school, pretty sad. They also sing the same old tired B1G plays boring football song. I for one, don't think we will ever see them in the B1G and I am fine with that.

Chicago is by far the center of the ND universe. The flag ship radio station for football is out of Chicago.

Pitt and Penn State have the same method of governance (as does Temple). They call them "state associated."
