CBS: Iowa signs 26-year-old ex-felon

Interesting story. Thanks for the link. Can't fault Iowa at all for what they're doing; it seems he's earned this chance. I hope he succeeds.

Isn't that what Gabe Kaplan's character did in "Fast Break"?

Came down to Iowa and Nebraska. Husker fans wanted him, but now that he committed to Iowa, they are making comments about how risky he would have been.

HMMMMMMM sounds like a lot of comments I read on the GopherHole.

Pierre Pierce?

I'm going to save time by not clicking the link and just assume that they found another loophole to get him back on the team. Maybe Ferentz led the cover up, er, investigation into this one too.

Is ex-felon correct? If you committed of a felony aren't you considered a felon even after you serve your prison sentence?

:notalegalexpert:

His crime wasn't close to victimless.

I "get" second chances but I don't think a felon with his record should ever be awarded a scholarship to a Big Ten school.

Ever.

Just wait until he gets into that marvelous offseason strength and conditioning program they have there at Iowa. He'll be wishing he was back sharing a shower stall with Bubba.

Correct. He may be an ex-con but he will be a convicted felon for the rest of his life.

I don't care that he "paid the price" for his crimes or about how much he's learned from this. HE'S A FREAKING FELON! There is no spin for this. So he learned his lesson...fantastic. Time to go get a job and attempt to become a contributing member to society. Nope. I-O-WAY has an open scholly, and they have no shame at all when it comes to winning (see rhabdomyolysis, 2007 gang rape cover up, and Pierce, Pierre).

This is an absolute embarrassment for the conference, and it should be to the non-sh!t kickers that claim that school. Have some freaking shame.

Wow...

I don't know how I feel about that. I really don't think the issue is "he paid his price". Yeah, he paid his price for FREEDOM. The kid obviously deserves the chance to come out of prison and try to get his life in order. However, if I lived in Iowa, I would have a difficult time with this kid getting a full ride to our public university. Before anyone thinks that i'm being hypocritical because it's Iowa, I am one of the guys that thought the U shouldn't play Mbakwe two seasons ago.

The GopherHole is full of haters....

the guy has paid his debt to society, luckily he is still young and talented enough to make big changes to his life.

What does anybody suggest he do other than college? Would you rather him continue living a criminal lifestyle?
ppl on this board sound bitter, chill out.

He made some mistakes as a teen, he was a menace to society. should that prevent him from progressing and furthering himself?

If anything this sounds like a successful rehabilitation by the justice system, which too often fails us.

Take a chill pill, this is a story of redemption and overcoming, not of a big ten schools misuse of athletic sholarships for the benefit of the program.

Well, I was married to a woman for over 30 years, then divorced. Should I still be considered her husband even after I served my prison sentence with her. Nope, I am ex-husband. I guess I just might be confused, but then again I don't know if I am or not.

The definition of a felon is someone who has been convicted of a felony. The definition of a husband is someone who is married to a wife. If you are no longer married, you become an ex-husband. To become an ex-felon wouldn't you need to have no longer have been convicted of a felony?

   Finally somebody understands. My goodness, so many of the youngsters today need everything spelled out in black and white..... Us oldtimers just say...."It's no big deal." Felon or ex-felon. wife or ex-wife. husband or ex-husband.

So now I bring this question to you specialists.... If I shoot a deer out hunting, is my game I took home as ex-deer?

So I go pheasant hunting and I bring home my limit of 2 birds. I will now say I have 2 ex-pheasants?

Go get'em Iowa

good player ----- I have talked to people who have watched him play --He is a player --- And from what they told me -- he is a changed man -- for the good..... Go Iowa

semantics...

Actually it's not, something he will find out if he ever tries to travel internationally, purchase a firearm, or when he applies for any job for the rest of his life. Once you're branded a felon, it is permanent. The repercussions are permanent. Just the way I works.

Except at Iowa, where it is not an impediment to a scholarship. Classy program/school/state.

Justice can be punitive. More importantly, however, justice should be reformative. Being punitive without being reformative, justice may only sustain the vicious cycle of criminal life. A part of reformation is intellectual and vocational education. Scholarship is merely a vehicle of it for the qualified.

Felons are restricted not because most of them need to be permanently excluded from the society but because precautionary measures against them are necessary. For instance, if qualified, it is up to the employers to hire felons though they are legally prohibited for certain jobs for security reasons. By the same token, it should be up to the institutions as athletic scholarship is not a matter of security.

No legal or moral dilemma there.

Is the deer or the pheasants you shot transforming into something else after death?

Admittedly I am just Having fun with semantics, but you suck at this game.

You need to step outside of your house once and a while. Turn off the sports. You are a very sad man.

Please, please! This is supposed to be a happy occasion! Let's not bicker and argue about who killed who. We are here today to witness the union of two young people in the joyful bond of the holy wedlock. Unfortunately, one of them, my son Herbert, has just fallen to his death.

That's a tough blow after they stuck their neck out for that kid.

We are no longer the knights who say ni! We are now the knights who say ekki-ekki-ekki-pitang-zoom-boing!

Exactly.

Try having a son that did a very stupid thing when he was young and see what he is going through trying to get all that behind him and constantly getting the door slammed in his face. Unless you have been in that situation, you don't fully understand.

I wish this young man nothing but success.
