Hazell is the only Big Ten coach on the list:

Darrell Hazell, Purdue (4): The former Ohio State assistant and Kent State coach is author of a 12-game losing streak against FBS opponents at Purdue. Hazell is only 2-22 against the Big Ten. Purdue officials have decided to keep him for what has to be a make-or-break season. Purdue -- 6-30 under Hazell -- should never be this bad, should it?

Go Gophers!!

I'm a little surprised that Claeys' seat isn't rated a little warmer. I guess it's hard to say that the next step warmer -- "pressure is mounting" -- is in play when the coach is in his first full season. However, given the short contract and low buyout, the AD is almost forced to make a decision on Claeys one way or the other at the end of this season.

I'm not sure contract plays into it at all. It's a light contract, they could easily just tack on some years without much reason.

The idea that a dude entering his first full season would have a "warmer" seat than anyone else is kinda bonkers....

They could easily just tack on some years without much reason? Why would an AD do that?

Now, if you said, "They could easily fire him without much reason," I'm with you. The buyout is low. Why would they increase the length of the contract -- and probably the buyout -- without much reason?

It is bonkers that he would have a warm seat right now. What I'm saying is that it's tough to ask a coach to recruit with two years on his contract. I think you need to extend him or cut him at the end of the season, but that's just me. Coyle has no ties to Claeys. With his current contract, it's easier to let him go than extend him.

To answer your first question, that's exactly what they do and have done, repeatedly.

Extending Tracy Claeys for cheap provided he doesn't implode is the easiest thing to do. Nick Saban isn't coming here, everyone knows it, putting themselves in the position to hire someone new is far more pressure than extending Claeys.

Kill got an extension before he even won a big ten game

Yes, that was odd. It definitely happens. But Kill and Claeys were hired under different circumstances.

In response to the bolded it's easier and cheaper to keep a coach than find a new one. Especially one that (hopefully) is running a clean program. There's always a risk you get a cheater or that the next coach is worse.

I suppose you have to kind of consider this year make or break because I think one way or another something has to happen with Claeys's contract this year. It could be as simple as a one or two year extension with a small buyout, it could be a complete restructure, or it could be termination.

I would be real surprised if Claeys is canned. The only ways I see that happening are:

1. Scandal.
2. Some type of unresolvable personality conflict.
3. The Gophers only win 5 or fewer games.

I think if they make a Bowl game Claeys at least gets a small extension. If they go 15-0 Claeys gets a HUGE extension. :)

Won't be surprised if Hazell is already gone by the time the Boilers visit TCF Bank Stadium.

I don't see any problem with rating Clayes a 2, all the new coaches were rated 0 to 2, Clayes got the warmest ranking at 2. We only had an interim AD at the time of the hiring, you need to recognize, that the short term of the contract was all about preserving maximum flexibility for the new permanent AD. There is some pressure on him to preform, but it's not even close to the pressure on Coach Franklin at PSU, who is rated a 3.
