CBS: College football attendance making rare increase early in 2015 (MN: +15%)

Through five weeks, announced attendance at Football Bowl Subdivision games is up for the first time in recent years. Attendance has increased a modest 1 percent compared to last season at this time, but the improvement is notable given that crowds had declined through Week 5 in at least each of the previous four years.

The average FBS home crowd this season is 45,422, according to CBS Sports' analysis of NCAA attendance data. That's up from 44,977 through five weeks in 2014, and below figures at this point from 2013 (45,596), 2012 (47,181) and 2011 (48,279).

The biggest increases in the Power Five: Virginia (29 percent), California (16 percent), Kentucky (16 percent), Minnesota (15 percent), Pittsburgh (14 percent), TCU (13 percent), Purdue (13 percent), Iowa State (11 percent) and Arizona (10 percent).

The early season home crowds have been great to this point. All the more reason we need to get a win on Saturday and then follow that up with a win over Nebraska heading into the bye week in order to keep some momentum going. If we fall flat against Purdue I could see there be some struggles attendance wise vs. Nebraska. Some of that will be mitigated by their large travelling fanbase but obviously we all want to see Gopher fans in those seats.

With year two of the season ticket price increase looming this really would be horrible timing for a down year. I know the general consensus on the increases seemed to be that the year one increases were not that bad, it was in year 2 and 3 where the strain would start to be felt as the prices kept going up.

Its all a lie, no way Minnesota is up, everyone said they were giving up their tickets last spring. How could it be?

Less season tickets and more individual tickets sold this year. Next year there will be even less season tickets. Let's see if individual ticket sales keep up.

The game against Nebraska won't sell out. Nebraska fans don't travel like they use to and if I'm not mistaken, they had only one charter plane for their bowl game last year and it didn't fill up. Throw in the fact that they are 2-3 and their season is already in the toilet, there will be less Cornhusker fans than usual. Yeah, we better not fall flat against Purdue or the crowd for the Nebraska game will look sad.

Dog forbid that we lose the next two games and there will be noticable empty seats even for the WI game assuming the skunks are no longer in the hunt for the West Division. Unless Illinois keeps it up and assuming we win a couple more games, this one will have a lot of empty seats. Throw in the weather factor and it could get really ugly crowd-wise.

Season tickets are down and that is what people were refering to. A lot more single game tickets are being purchased.

A full student section, for starters. That's a few thousand extra without the cost increase. Plus Living Social deals that made $15 tickets available for Kent State, and inexpensive tickets even for TCU. Plus the two packs, which likely saw bounces from Wisconsin and Nebraska fans.

Having said that, the crowds have been much better than most probably expected even with those deals. Gotta get back to winning.
