per CBS:

Welcome to the first unintended consequence of autonomy.

Hawaii can't afford to keep playing football, so it may drop football.

Those essentially were the words of Hawaii AD Ben Jay on Monday speaking to the school's board of regents. Jay's athletic department is facing a $2.1 million budget deficit. On the horizon are added expenses for cost of attendance in autonomy.

Judging from Jay, it is not an expense Hawaii can afford at the moment.

“There's a very real possibility of football going away,” he said.

Go Gophers!!

Good luck recruiting to Hawaii now.

Sad to see as it is a matter of pride on the Islands. I had the joy of seeing them play a home game several years ago and it was a ton of fun. Granted they lost to Alabama, but that part aside, what a place to see a game (paradise). June Jones left Hawaii due to the decrepit campus and athletic facilities. Looks like it didn't get better. There is a reason Fairbanks and Anchorage will never have Div 1 football either. Too expensive to fly so much. You'll see a lot more schools drop back to Div II and Div III to avoid the extra expenses. Which means less kids will get scholarships to play football in America. So, as the article says, the unintended consequences start.

Why are unitended? Seems to me that the intention of breaking away the top schools from the NCAA is to keep more money generated by these schools with these schools...so an easy connection and clearly intentional consequence will be fewer major football programs because less money is coming there way.

The 280 non-major conference NCAA d-1 schools could vote the separation down and make the NCAA fight it...but they won't. They are mostly tired of trying to keep up with the Jone's and they know the gravy train is over.

What I read from the article is that Hawaii was thinking of dropping because they won't be able to pay the extras the athletes are demanding (real cost of attendance, medical insurance, stipends, etc). So the intended consequence of athletes asking for those things were to better their lives while they play collegiate sports. The unintended consequence will be a vast reduction in the number of available slots to do so in the future. So if you are the better than Div 1A player but not qute a BCS level player, watch out. Your new spot will be at NDSU. And if you are a Div 1A caliber player, get ready to make St. John's good again and pay your way doing it. And if your a Div 3 player, get ready to cheer whatever school you pay to go to on in their quest for a title.
