per CBS:

For the past couple of months, there have been rumors that Pastner is poised to hire Keelon Lawson as an assistant coach. Lawson is the father of Dedric, 2015 Memphis-commit K.J. Lawson and elite 2019 prospect Chandler Lawson.

Dedric Lawson admits it's not a done deal yet, but Pastner hiring his father would sway him in the direction of the Tigers.

“That would probably seal the deal for me, to commit to Memphis,” he said.

Lawson is ranked No. 8 in the 247Sports Composite for the class of 2016.

I'd probably go there too if they'd hire my dad. Nothing like indirect payment to players.

These type of situations should put a school on some sort of probation.

They should just slip the kids envelopes of cash like they do in football.

If something similar were happening to the Gophers I'd be 100% behind it.

That's why the NCAA has such strict limits on the number of paid assistants (3, plus one director of bb ops). But even with those limits, if it's going to get you 5* recruits why not just have two "real" assistants and keep the third one open for bringing in fathers or AAU coaches of the big recruits. There's no limit to what you can pay them, so yeah, it really is like paying for players.

If a coach has his kid on the team, can the coach buy said kid a car and nice things? Just curious.

The issue shouldn't be hiring the father. The issue should be if the father quits or gets fired soon after his son is out of school or chooses not to go that school. Maybe the father is a good coach.

It happens

Larry Brown hired Ed Manning as an asst and Kansas won the National title with son Danny Manning.

UNLV

Larry Brown hired Ed Manning as an asst and Kansas won the National title with son Danny Manning.

UNLV hired Vaughn's babysitter at it's Henderson facility and hired a previous worker at the Henderson facility/former babysitter. We'll see how it works for them.

Breaking news - the University of Minnesota has hired Richard Coffey as an assistant coach.............

It's official:

Memphis head coach Josh Pastner hopes his newest assistant coaching hire will keep it in the family.

That's because Keelon Lawson, a head coach at Hamilton High School in Memphis, has four sons who are considered to be elite prospects -- three of whom will play at the college level within the next five years.

And we'll find out in just a few days if this did in fact "seal the deal" for Lawson:
