Can't complain about the offense

This has been gone through before but those numbers are totally misleading. The offense was not very functional for most of the year. We hammered poor opponents, turning them over and getting runouts. The bright spot on offense has been our 3 point shooting led by Hoffarber.

It isn't that misleading. In Big Ten Conference games ONLY, the Gophers are third in scoring and only .3 points away from the top:

1) Northwestern 68.7
2) Ohio State 68.5
3) Minnesota 68.4

But, the Gophers are 9th in scoring defense in Big Ten games ONLY.

Because our half court offense was so poor (did you watch it?) we pushed the tempo whenever we could in an attempt to score before the opposition was set. This leads to more possessions and higher scoring. Thus we have inflated offensive numbers and worse defensive numbers than reality would indicate.

How do you account for the offense the last several weeks then? We haven't pushed it for a while.

OMG, and here I always thought reality means what actually happens. Evidently it means what should happen according to, well, I suppose according to someone's idea of what a model offense is. Good grief, now we will have to go back say twenty or thirty years, perhaps even a half-century, and let all those push-the-tempo teams know that their big scoring stats were artificially inflated and don't actually exist.

I can't fer sure, but I'm quite positive that makes no sense whatsoever.

I can complain. Count the number of off-the-ball screens we set in a game sometime (in a half court set, in-bouds plays don't count). The half-court game is very frustraing to watch, especially when we're cold from the outside.

Poorly worded Jake- you got me there. The point is this: Reality: our offense was poor and our defense was usually pretty good (the situation changed a bit on each end once Nolen was gone but this was generally true). Our team this year was a bully squad. When we played poor teams we absolutely hammered them running up and down the court. In the Big Ten against Iowa and Indiana we averaged 83 points a game in the 4 match ups. Against the rest of the Big 10 - we averaged 64 points. Yes, by stats our offense looks fine. However, even Tubby will admit that we are not a good half court offensive club (he said it in a post game interview).

So - if someone wants to say "you can't complain about the offense" look how highly it's ranked...... I'm just saying- don't be fooled, this offense neither looked good nor performed well in most Big Ten games.

That's a pretty telling breakdown. Although, I do believe the half-court offense has gotten better in the past 3 weeks - toss out the Michigan game, that is.

Your (restated) point definitely has merit.

Except we are 4th in per possession offense. More possessions does not affect the per possession offensive numbers. And it was 4th in the Big Ten. Don't be fooled by your (mis)perception.

The rest of the Big Ten played the same teams and only 3 teams performed better offensively.
