UW won the 2011 and ’12 games by a combined 80-26.
UW had to rally for victories in 2013 and ’14, winning by 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Last season in Minneapolis, UW overcame an early 7-0 deficit to record a 31-21 victory...
The Gophers’ three league losses this season have been by a combined 17 points — by three in overtime at Penn State, by seven at home against Iowa and by seven at Nebraska.
They are coming off an impressive 29-12 victory over visiting Northwestern. That victory assured the Gophers of finishing with at least eight victories for the third time in four seasons.
Minnesota hadn’t accomplished that feat since 1903-’06.
You want more history? Consider that Jim Wacker led the Gophers to a 2-3 mark against UW in his five seasons as head coach (1992-’96). That run included a 28-21 victory in 1993 in Minneapolis. UW finished 10-1-1 that season and the loss to the Gophers cost the Badgers a shot at finishing No. 1 in the polls.
The four coaches who have followed Wacker — Glen Mason, Tim Brewster, Kill and Claeys — are a combined 2-17 against UW. Mason has both victories, going 2-8 in his 10 seasons.
“It annoys me, too,” fifth-year senior safety Damarius Travis said of losing to UW. “I feel where Coach Claeys is coming from.
“I think leadership and confidence will put us over the edge this year.”
