I received an e-mail the other day in reference to Andre Hollins (Memphis, Tenn./White Station) regarding his candidacy for the McDonald's All-American game. Hollins, an ESPNU 100 player, isn't going to make the burger game but we appreciated the update and upon further review, certainly aren't opposed to giving credit where it's due.
Hollins made national waves as a sophomore at the Nike Hoop Jamboree. Basically, he was credited as being one of the elite shooters in the class and also one of the best senior students we encountered (he sports a 4.8 GPA!). Recruited by the highest level basketball programs and academic institutions, he chose the Minnesota Golden Gophers and he should leave White Station with a tremendous amount of momentum.
Last year, Hollins was Robin to the Batman known as Joe Jackson (Memphis Tigers). He averaged 15 points for the state runners-up. By the way, he's either been state champion or runner-up his entire high school career. This season, with Jackson across town playing for the Tigers, Hollins cranked up his game and is averaging 25 points a night. Against Findlay Prep, Hollins poured in 46 points.
Not everyone plays in the McDonald's game, Jordan game, Elite 24, etc., but this country is dotted with good players and good stories. Hollins deserves to be in contention for player of the year in his state (unfortunately, he lives in the same area as Adonis Thomas (Memphis, Tenn./Melrose)) and has our respect. As a junior, we worried that his game had leveled off. Following last summer, that clearly wasn't the case and he's proven to be more than merely a shooter. He'll be a huge contributor for Tubby Smith and we've got no problem diming him up for a job well done.
