Miss State has had a very good season. But where is the successful HC experience factor that seems to be a top priority?

Urban Meyer protege, developed a number of solid college QBs, decent recruiter, progression in his brief MSU tenure.

Like everyone else, he's not perfect. Good measurables for a young candidate, though.

Well, he's been a successful head coach this year in the SEC at Mississippi State (one of the least desirable jobs in that conferece). Mullen's biggest question mark is the "successful head coach" area.

Here's his positives

Big time experience at a big time school where he achieved great results (QB/OC at Florida)
Experience recruiting against the big boys of college football
Known for being associate with a particular offense and has gotten excellent results from that offense
Proven not just at Florida, but at Utah as well.

He's got everything I would look for an ideal candidate besides a longer resume as a head coach. He crosses off a lot more items on my list than Calhoun, Hoke, Edsall, mid major coach dujour.

Successfull coordinator and QB coach before becoming a head coach

There is a common trend amongst most of the successful head coaches. Some of the very "best"
have been really successful coordinators or they have been successful QB coaches, that called games and developed a lot of good QB. Mullen has done that at his stops from Bowling Green, to Utah to Florida, and now MSU, he took an underdeveloped QB and has elevated his play.
Mullen has really done an excellent job developing quarterbacks even mediocre athletic QB's like Alex Smith and made them better at the college level than maybe there talent level would indicate.

That said I doubt he has interest in our job at this point he hasn't even talked to any of our people, from the couple guy's I talk to, this is to far gone down the path with other guy's to get Mullen, as it sounds like Mullen has not even been called or contacted. I don't like Houston Nutt either good thing he is going to take the Colorado job. Edsall is a big downer if that is who we settle for. UCONN played really poorly against Michigan and that was not a good football team that Michigan put on the field this year. They really should not have lost as bad or been dominated by Michigan like they were, this was Michigan's worst defense sense 2008 and probably historically one of the worst defense's the Wolverines have ever had and they whipped UCONN. Rich Rod> Edsall does not bode well for us if we end up with Edsall. This news is really disheartening and what I had feared from the time Joe Schmidt mentioned his name. Figures he would be a guy Maturi would like. Big thumbs down!

Have you seen his team play

they are pretty damn good in just his second year. But I don't think he leaves for the gophs. He will stay in the south where the talent is. MN just doesn't produce the quality of recruit that can attract a big time coach, just plain and simple. We need a coach who will be able to take 2 & 3 star recruits and turn them into big time players, much like Mason did until he took a sh!t on this program by becoming disinterested.

Everyone seems to have a favorite and also seems to hate every other favorite identified. How will any coach ever be hired here? It really does seem as though there may be a few people who accept one of the coaching names mentioned and they can only find fault with the other names mentioned. It really is getting pretty disheartening to see that none of the people the fans mention are acceptable to the other fans. So much dislike. So much "my way or the highway..." attitude is being displayed. I honestly don't believe any of the coaches I have seen mentioned are sure-fire locks on having success at this program that has proven to be more of a "grave-stone" job than a "stepping-stone" job. Yet, one person is going to have to be hired.

Unless they hurry up and name the coach, everyone will have read such trash-talk about the qualifications of any of the usual suspects of possible coaching candidates that no one will be able to take the new coach seriously. A fact of life is that none of these names is worth the money that they may be offered, but, with each and every round of inflation in coaching salaries, the cost goes up. Less bang for the buck is achieved.

Some people from iowa don't think Ferentz is worth the 3.75 million he will be receiving. Some of them even would like to see him fired. (He has raised their expectations so much that now they think they are being short-changed unless they actually win a Big Ten Title outright.) Maybe iowa can hurry up and fire Ferentz so that we can try to hire him!!!!! But, I am sure that some of our fans feel that we are entitled to a coach who can insure that the U of M will become an elite football power on a national level within the next 3 seasons or less.

I don't know people, it seems to me as though we are going to have to just sit back and allow Dave Mona to "sell us" the new coaching hire. We just need to be "monaized" and we will all be able to fall in line behind the new coach, increase our contributions and just be nice little football fans again. That is what the administration would like.

But, I sense that squabbling over "fan favorite" candidates that may...or may not actually be candidates will certainly leave a LOT of people unsatisfied with the hire when it finally is made. That would be too bad for 2011 and beyond.

Good luck to us all!

No point in selling you. He's achieved a stature above us and will be in the mix with Miami and Michigan if they open the position. He'll leave Mississippi State someday for a top 20 program.

Walrus, you're dead wrong. I know for a fact that my favorite guy is the only guy who can ever win here and everyone else's favorites are a bunch of girlie men. The proof that he'd be the best coach ever is that fact that I like him more. If we hire anyone other than my guy, I will buy season tickets just so I can sell them, and I'll stop going to the games just as soon as I can get down there for one.

Wren not everyone was on board with the Mason firing

You have been around along time and know that there were a lot of people that did not agree with the Mason firing. Thought it was jumping the gun and really non-nonsensical after the extension and cost the U a lot of money. Those of us that thought the last coach was a real "football" coach would get shouted down now by those that thought he was disinterested, lazy, and had checked out. I feared what would happen the second I saw the TV report that Maturi fired Mason after the Tech debacle. You knew that Maturi "wanted his guy, had to have his guy" like that character from Lord of the Rings that was obsessed with the precious, and thus fired coach Mason and staff. I don't know it is more than gutt feeling, but a lot of folks talk to people in the AD and there was a lot of people that said with good reason not to trust Maturi on this hire. He will want his guy and that is who we will end up with, even if there are questions by others that had reservations. Many said do not trust Joel and these are people that have to work for him. I know that it takes two to tango and that ultimately other people turned Minnesota down but they all said if it came down to Joel's call that be careful you might get had. He really wanted the anti-Mason, bold talking, high goal setting, high selling wheeling dealing type, that would hype the program to the media and sell tickets. To bad he picked the least experienced guy that had only been a TE coach and was the best salesman to do the job. Brewster was almost entirely Joel Maturi's call.
Now we will get the opposite of Brewster, all coach, serious and stern, less recruiting and settling for less. There are many that have angst or regrets that Maturi is in charge of this thing this time around and again, time will tell if we were right to be wary of Maturi making this call. You can pretty well guess we will be in the same boat again in 3-4 years if Joel makes another wrong call. Edsall is a ho-hum Tier II guy.

But they can win at Iowa and Wisconsin with similar (or inferior) instate recruits? Not buyin it.

"Genius", "offensive mastermind" "super star in waiting" descriptions among others

WAY more appealing than Calhoun, Hoke, Edsall etc because he has earned a "potential" label and he hasn't proven he is mediocre as the other tier 2 guys commonly listed have established for themselves. Mullen is also younger, more dynamic which is a benefit to recruiting etc.

I don't see anyone gushing about the other candidates from people who know them. Marc Trestman has more accolades than Hoke, Calhoun, Edsall etc from football people. Mullen is clearly regarded as a superior candidate compared to these other guys by football people in their regions on the basis of their comments..

This is what's wrong with this site. Lots of people are completely lost on a national level. Mullen would be a shocking hire, case closed. You shouldn't need someone to sell him to you, we would have to be doing all the selling to him.

I was just in MN (Bloomington, actually) and everyone that I ran into long enough to hold half of a conversation with eyes' would light up when they found out I went to Miss State. Dan Mullen is a hot name with everyone up there and yes, he is on their radar..The question is, does he have his antennas out feeling around?

I look at it like having a hot wife..Take it as a compliment when people stare, but don't be too cocky about the maintenance required to fulfill your side of the deal or she'll end up on someone else's arm with you doing the staring.

Truth...
