Marty Davis employs nearly 2,000 people as CEO of his international Cambria quartz surfaces business. Three years ago, the high-energy local businessman was among Gophers athletics director Mark Coyle’s 22-person search committee to find a football coach.

After Coyle hired P.J. Fleck, the new coach invited Davis, a University of Minnesota grad, to peruse the Gophers’ practice facilities.

“I walked up the stairs to a meeting room — I had a hat on — and on the way up, three players hollered at me to take my hat off,” Davis recalled. “I learned later that one of P.J.’s policies is that you don’t have a hat on in a room.

“I thought, this guy’s got control.”

Davis and I were chatting a couple of weeks before Fleck’s team bounced Auburn with better coaching and better players in a 31-24 Outback Bowl victory. A month earlier, Coyle had signed Fleck to a seven-year, $33.25 million contract extension.

“Three years before P.J. had even won a game, I called Coyle and said, ‘that guy could run any company in this town,’ ” Davis said. “If I had an executive like that in my company, I’d sign him for as long as I could. I said, ‘Mark, you’ve got to invest with him. You get a talent like that, you’ve got to hold him. You’ve got to get him before he’s hot. I was in school here at the University when Lou Holtz left (1985). We didn’t want to lose P.J.

“Of course, Mark knew that in advance — that’s why he hired him.”

Coyle had a 22 person search committee. Something I hadn’t heard before. I wonder if this was to satisfy University policy, or if the committee had real influence for selecting Fleck.

Right? Sounds a bit fishy to me. Typical CEO speak.

Having a hiring committee is not a strange thing at all. The big thing is Coyle didn't contract with one of the big search firms that a lot of schools use to find and hire football coaches. Assume any hiring committee would have been a handpicked group by Coyle to help with vetting candidates and conducting the whole process.

All that said, it was clear pretty quick that Fleck was his #1 target and he went out and got him. How much the committee was involved we will probably never truly know, or need to know for that matter.

Are members of this 22 person search committees boosters?
 

I don't think it was a 22-person "search committee". I believe there are 22 people who feel the need to have a say in the decision on whether someone gets hired or not.

Somewhere at the U, there is a 22 person committee.
That's not shocking.

How many were searching for candidates I would put at zero. I'd put it at one if Coyle was on that 22 person committee.

Hey, something named “shooter” said it so I’m not sure how you can dispute that.
 

Creating consensus with a desired outcome is not uncommon. In PJ's case, if there's an influential group paving the way upon arrival, sounds like a great strategy. Well done.

This. It doesn't mean he had to please 22 people. It means he had 22 people at his disposal to consult. Probably talked to 5 of them.

But a CEO of company said it, and Shooter printed it ... How can it not be true? I guess it’s back to only believing Sid.

Yeah, hiring committees are not uncommon in most organizations. Doesn't mean the committee had any real power or say but rare, especially in education, for any decision to get made by just one individual.

Would agree 100% that Coyle was the one doing the searching, I would be shocked to find out this group had anything to do with that. And the way the hire went I doubt the committee had much impact at all because Coyle zeroed in on Fleck quickly and it didn't take long to get it done.

I heard this from some people in this AD department. He told Coyle, my dream is to be a head coach in the Big Ten.
