Just wanted you guys to know you guys just picked up a commitment from Butler (KS) CC FB Miles Thomas. Thomas is 6'0", 240-pounds and was the Kansas 8-Man POTY two years ago at Lakeside-Downs HS. Kid is very strong and a tough SOB, congrats!

Thanks for the info. KU4, looks like a great blocker.

He is and was a heck of a runner in high school (went well over 2,000 yards his senior season). Remember watching him squat over 500-pounds at the 8-Man State Power Lifting meet at 215-pounds. Kid has a FB mentality as well and is your classic small town mauler. Lol his nickname was "The Pain Train".

Congrats to Miles!

Jerry Kill is building a very nice walk on program at the U. The word is getting out.

Not a bad walk on pick up at all.

Did I miss something? I see the word "committment" and I take that to mean a scholarship player. Where does it say he's a walk-on?

Either way, I think Kill's offense requires a strong FB, and it means they don't have to move a TE into the backfield (unless they want to.)

He was told to walk-on for a semester and then will be given a scholarship.

Cory Schlesinger was a 8 man RB in NE that came in and helped NE win a couple of Nat Championships. That guy destroyed LBs and DEs and could catch the ball out of the backfield. Decent runner when he got it on the option. If this guy is in that same mold...could be a huge pick up for our run game and our pass rush blocking.

If he is as physical as advertised, and because he played 8 man football, he will become my favorite gopher. I think the loss of Mike Henry is a bigger blow than one would think, but I really hope this guy is legit!

Welcome Miles! This sounds like an awesome get in that he is a true FB and a real bruiser. I'm already excited to see how the coaching staff uses him other than for blocking (opposing linebackers are going to hate this guy being on the field). I'm hoping he can also carry the ball for those third and short situations and perhaps be that sneaky receiver out the backfield.

Ski-U-Mah and Go Gophers!

Is this the mysterious third early enrollee? I remember someone, maybe coach Kill ,saying that there would be two early enrollees and maybe a third. In any case he answers my question about who would fill the FB slot.

Am I missing something, or aren't we getting two commits here. Riley Oharah is also a FB who is coming to Minnesota according to tweet above. Far left.

Has he ever played any defensive end or tackle?

Coach Miller has had some success with Kansas Jucco players especially Butler, in developing defensive players. He coach Miller is Gophers linebacker coach and coached at a lot of successful programs. Even coach Phelps the defensive line coach, he may want him to play defensive tackle. He looks like a kid that could get below an O-linemans pad level real easy and create havoc on defense. We used to have a DT John Schlect that came in as a really strong guy that was undersized height wise but he was really hard to block and was a pretty good college defensive tackle in this kind of mold. Came in as a walk on from St Cloud State and was scholarship player after Spring practice and next recruiting cycle. Miles looks like he has huge hands and shoulders, kind of a classic NT build, and as a fullback he already likes to hit people. He could be a fairly dominant nose tackle with the right coaching.
He reminds me a lot of Schlect size wise and Schlect could be fairly un-blockable on defense at times.
I know kids like to have the ball in there hands but with that kind of squat lift(that is some serious leg strength) and he even looks to have upper body strength you could see a kid like this easily playing defense, middle linebacker, defensive tackle or defensive end. He would be tough to block if he has decent quickness as he would be a mismatch for most O-lineman with that height and strength combination. Is he strictly offensive player or are both commitments full-backs? What is the eligibility two years to play two, and Miles be enrolling for Spring Semester in order to be eligible for Spring practice? What about the other fullback guy you know anything about him? We need a fullback on offensive side of ball anyways but the way he gets up a head of steam and can drive a guy off the ball, I could see him being a nose tackle also.

I saw that too. Interesting.......

According to the Butler roster, Thomas is 5'11 and 236, Oharah is 6'0 244.

Do these guys know they are being brought in as walk-on nose tackles?

Might have been a good idea...back in the 1960's...

not sure this is the plan...

He looks very strong... plays until the whistle.. once he locks u are not getting off his block. Good pickup

He reminds me of Conrad Dobler. Although Conrad played guard, he continued to play guys even when they were taken out of the play and were on the ground. Good stuff!

He is 5' 11 1/2''. You know how them football guys are about those 1/2 inches!! LOL. In the Butler test day held prior to this most recent season he bench pressed 225lbs 29times, he squatted 315 33 times. He was clocked at 4.62 in the 40 on a tennis court with basketball shoes, also a 34'' vertical. His max on bench press is around 415 and squat is in the high 500's (585+) and he has repped 550, 3 times. His pre-season weight is typically 240-245 but I'm sure coaches will have him eating well to maintain that weight throughout the season. Hardworker, loves the game, and loves the weight room even more. I just thought I would add this since I did notice somewhere in the thread someone wondering about his upperbody strength. Oh and KU4Life mentioned his powerlifting at the State 8-man powerlifting meet, he did squat 500, weighed 208.6 at the weigh in and was competing in the 220lb. division. If I'm not mistaken, I believe he either tied or won outright, the state record for most weight lifted for the 220lb. division at that competition. I'm not sure if the record still stands or not though. Excited for some Gopher-BALL!!!!

newestgopherfan welcome to the board I assume that Miles is enrolling for the spring semester. I hope he has good hands, the coaches don't hand the ball off to the FB very often, but they do use the FB screen and wheel route. If Riley Oharah is coming as well we might have to start calling them the BCC Bruise Brothers.

From what I hear at this point, yes Riley is coming as well. Miles will be there next weekend to start classes and practices. Thank you for the welcome!!!! Please take a look at the link I will post below. You can watch the whole thing or start about the 3:18 mark, that will probably answer your question about hands/wheel route.

Now that's a kid with a lot of drive! I love to see the way he finishes those blocks.

Seems like a great replacement for Henry. Making it for spring practice is huge. I only wish cheap shot Borland was still around to receive some punishment from Miles.
