per Tom Dienhart's picks for best road trips for the season:

Week 5: Minnesota at Michigan. The Little Brown Jug is one of the sport’s most famous trophies. This year’s meeting seemingly is a tale of programs trending in opposite directions. The Wolverines have dominated this series, going 39-3 in the last 42 meetings. The Golden Gophers’ lone wins in that stretch have come in 1977, 1986 and 2005. Still, Minnesota is a program on the rise under Jerry Kill and is coming off consecutive bowl trips. Conversely, Michigan is struggling under Brady Hoke, coming off a disappointing 7-6 season that has some wondering about the direction of a program that has seen its win total drop each of the last three seasons.

I fondly ...

...remember the 1977 16-0 Kent Kitzman game.

The U should invite back the 1977 team for this years game.

Yep. I was half way down the 10th fairway when Kitzman broke the record for most rushes. Heard it on the transistor radio..........some of you will remember them.

Kent Kitzman record 57 carries for 265 was at Champaign in a 21-0 win.

In the 1977 Michigan game they were number 1, featured Rick Leach at QB. The defense that day harassed Leach, I think got 3 turnovers. The key play a 4th and goal run by Marion Barber. That and three field goals from Paul Rogind. That defense had three or four players I remember Stan Sytsma, Mark Merrill, Steve Midboe, and Steve Stewart having a heroic game.

Kitzman may have been in Champaign but I was still in the 10th fairway.:cool02:

And I will never forget another Illinois game. It was on I think Channel 9. It was a game that featured and Illinois team that fumbled 6 times and Senior Gil Fash made his first start and threw 4 interceptions. But he completed his second pass 29 yards to Dale Henricksen in the final minutes for the win.

He should be a guest at any Illinois game, home or away.

A lot of bad memories here, and its not about the Michigan games. Holy crap. The Fash game was not on TV.

Highwayman: The Fash game was in 1973 when both Tony Dungy and John Lawling (?) were hurt. My memory isn't what it used to be but
I'm pretty sure it was televised.

Channel 9 was the ABC station in the 1970's. And I think the had access to either Raycom Sports or TVS out of Chicago on a syndicated basis. If they could sell the advertising, they would pick up a Gopher road game. Paul Giel worked tirelessly to broadcast Gopher sports. I was just back from the service and was in my parents den watching it. The broadcast was either poor, while it was partly cloudy it appeared to be slightly foggy.

I think you might be confused. I could be wrong but I think what you're describing is the 2013 game against NMSU on AggieVision.

Just google searched wtf this thing you speak of is

jumping in another corner of my mind, I think the 1986 game at Ann Arbor was on My 29. I have seen tape of it. I was listening to the radio that day, an when Lomiller came on the field 105,000 were as silent a church mouse. And you knew it was good when there was no response when Ray called it. Absolute stunned silence. That team had another Gopher hero in the locker room. The players to a man credited Butch Nash for the win.

Not to sound like a big homer but I think Gophers-TCU week 3 will be a better game than Huskers-Fresno State. Without Carr, Fresno will fall back quite a bit imo.

Ok, I'm not sure about the Fash game anymore. Maybe I did watch it. I know we listened to it, but my dad used to watch the games with the volume off and Ray Christiansen on.

All said, we used to have a family award called "The Gil Fash Award". It was awarded to someone who did something quite unexpected, especially if it was apparently out of their "skill set".

As for the 1986 game, I saw the last quarter on "The kitten that roars," KTIN. It was a local Michigan broadcast that was piped to the TC. The reaction of the broadcast team is hilarious. It's basically "the kick is good, there's no time left, Minnesota wins, and we'll see you next week." Hilarious.
