BTN: Power Rankings: Gophers keep jumping up list - #4!!

Michigan at 7 and Iowa at 8 is an overreaction (something Dienhart is notorious for). Both lost to really good teams in Michigan State and Wisconsin.

At worst Michigan is 5, and I'd still put them above us, with us being 5th. If Nebraska doesn't get an absolutely lucky hail mary they are below them. Different points in the season aside, I saw enough of Michigan and Nebraska to know which one is better. And Penn State is just silly, win over Michigan at home or not.

I'd put Iowa at 6, below us but ahead of Nebraska and Penn State (seriously, what's impressive about needing OT to beat Illinois at home?)

These things are so subjective week to week. If I was going to rank the Big Ten I would probably do something like this:

1 - Ohio State
2 - Michigan State
3 - Wisconsin
4,5,6,7,8 (in pretty much any order) - Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, Penn State, Nebraska
9 - Northwestern
10 - Indiana
11 - Illinois
12 - Purdue

Agreed, though if I were to break your 4-8 tie I'd say Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, PSU, in that order. Indiana may be better than NW right now.

I don't think Penn State belongs in the same class as those other four teams. Yes, they beat Michigan, but they also lost to Indiana (badly) and their second best win was over Syracuse.

If they beat us next week, fine, but I'd put them below those other teams, including us.

Dienhart says Wisconsin is under the radar? Hogwash. That title in the Big Ten belongs to Michigan State.

Does anybody think we're better than Iowa and Michigan?

To add to that, there are only two FBS teams who haven't scored at least 40 against Indiana: Bowling Green (10) and Penn St. (24).

Than Iowa? Now? Yeah, they're better than Iowa.

I think it is a lot closer than it was when we played them. Iowa's three recent losses have come to Michigan St., Ohio St., and Wisconsin. They were all close games.

We agree that it's "closer" but do we disagree who's better now?

We do disagree on how to define "close". By 10 to tOSU, yeah, right with you there. By 12 to MSU, a game where MSU got 394 yards of Offense and Iowa 216, including minus 48 yards on the ground? No, not that close. Losing to Wisconsin yesterday by 19? Even though Wisconsin's last TD was late, wouldn't call a 2-TD plus loss close, even though Iowa was in the game for 3 Quarters.

They needed overtime to get their only win during that stretch against Northwestern. They got Purdue, Michigan and Nebraska left. They should get Bowl eligible next week.

Don't know if they'll finish better than Minnesota or not.

Iowa is better than the Gophers to date, based on both head-to-head and strength of schedule. It could change. If the Gophers win two more games (including beating either Whiskey or Sparty), then they'll have earned better-team honors.

I think MN and Iowa are both better than Michigan. Michigan has a tough schedule left.

Lets not forget us beating Indiana.. I agree with you here, BTW. I second your ratings.

not gonna lie, I have no idea what AR is thinking in those rankings

Despite losing to us, Nebraska jumps us by beating a team by three at home that we beat by three on the road, in a week where we also won, and we beat them head to head?

This is picking nits, but Mason and Griffith both had the order OSU, MSU, UW, MN and NEB. I don't know the name of the host, but he made the comment that "there is a lot of red on that list, with 4 of 5 teams". The Gophers are not red. Gopher fans hate red.

I know it's only a weekly "Power Rankings" but why is Nebraska ahead of Minnesota? Minnesota beat Nebraska one week ago and beat NW in Evanston two weeks ago while Nebraska needed a hail mary pass to beat NW at home in Lincoln coming off their loss at Minnesota a week ago.

Brian Bennett

It was a tough call, and one we wrestled with. We're probably not giving Minnesota enough credit. We will look at that again this week, and Nebraska should tell us whether it deserves to be in the top 5 or 6 after going to Michigan

Go Gophers!!
