While not news to most of us, it's a little bit eye-opening when looking at the active NFL rosters in Week 1 when comparing Big Ten alum. Us and Indiana are clearly the outliers:

MINNESOTA
Eric Decker, Denver Broncos
MarQueis Gray, Cleveland Browns
Marcus Sherels, Minnesota Vikings
Matt Spaeth, Pittsburgh Steelers

Go Gophers!!

1. Ohio State - 30
2. Iowa - 26
3. Penn State - 25
4. Illinois/Wisconsin - 23
6. Michigan/Nebraska - 22
8. Purdue - 18
9. Michigan State - 14
10. Northwestern - 8
11. Indiana - 5
12. Minnesota - 4

Interesting to see Illinois up there with the likes of Michigan, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. Iowa doesn't really surprise me, I remember reading something on Black Heart Gold Pants awhile back that showed by some statistical measure that Ferentz was the best coach in the country at preparing players for the NFL. Thought Purdue might be lower and Michigan State higher, though I believe MSU is in the top 15 or so nationally as far as total players sent to the NFL. I thought we had a couple more pros than that. I don't really pay much attention to pro football, but I thought Simoni Lawrence and Traye Simmons were still floating around the league somewhere, and Marion Barber only retired about a year ago.

big ten

Iowa's mark is so amazing when you consider he rarely has anthing representing a top 25 recruiting class. Unlike Ohio St, Penn st., Michigan, and Nebraska who get top 20 or higher classes every year. It also shows how dissapointing Illinois record is for the amount of talent that has come from that team into the nfl.

and right now only guys i can see for next year are vereen and hageman. making it in the league that is

Players who should be peaking in their NFL careers right now come from the Brewster era, so this isn't surprising.

What was Mason's peak? Had to be somewhere around 10+.

This is even with Sherels and Gray somewhat barely making their respective teams.

It would be interesting to know how many NIU and SIU alum are on week one rosters that played under Kill and staff. Take that number and them multiply what you think a B1G increase from the MAC is worth. :)

Totally agree on Illinois.

Shede is pegged at number 19 overall in this mock. This is only a mock and I never look very far into these, especially during week 1 of the season, but it is nice seeing his name in the top 32 and if he stays the course he's on this season it will only keep rising! Especially after the NFL Combine where I think he really shines!

I'm not sure if we would count him - but I know Tramaine Brock is on the 49ers.

Sounds like a job for dpoll...start digging up the stats and facts

Nah, just sounds like an asshole comment to me. (meaning the previous post, not yours). Are they on a roster today, or aren't they?

Gophers have always been at/near the bottom of the B1G in NFL players for the past 15 years. I would guess the high point was somewhere around 10-12. I think there was a point where Tyrone Carter, Mark Setterstrom, MBII, Maroney, Utecht, Spaeth, Darell Reid, and Gary Russell were all in the league.

We seem to have a lot more guys just on the fringe of NFL rosters than in the past. Guys like Ced McKinley, Simoni Lawrence, Nate Tripplett, Traye Simmons and Dom Alford have all been in the league/on practice squads in the past year or two. I think Jon Hoese has had chances with the Packers and Raiders too.

Oopps, I hit the wrong button! I meant to make the above comment on the NIU and SIU alums in the NFL.

Go Gophers!!

Another stat to show how far we have fallen. Several MAC teams (Kent State, Toledo, Akron, Buffalo, etc.) have just as many, or more, players in the NFL as/than we do.

I believe Kill will change that over the next 3-5 years.
