BTN: 2013 B1G writers’ football uniform power rankings (Gophers uniforms rank #10)

"11. Minnesota: There’s always just way too much going on. And, it seems like they’re wearing something different every time I see them."

It's always hard to overcome the jerseys with history, because people love those and for some reason cannot seem to separate the historic elements from just the straight-up jersey design when they rank them. With that said, I don't know how anyone can rank our new jerseys below Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, and Northwestern. And personally, I think these new jerseys should get us to about fourth, behind Nebraska, Ohio State, and Penn State.

Other than the spot-on comment about the formerly "teeny-tiny" Block M on our helmets from the Mason-era (Spermy formerly lamented about that ad nauseum) . . .

Anyone who has seen our unis in-person, home or away, on a sunny autumn Saturday afternoon, could not possibly rank them anywhere close to the lower half. Simply put, they are spectacular in that light and setting.

Even under the lights they are striking - but ahhhh, in fall's lower-angle sunlight . . . . resplendent!

The Gophers should wear gold pants for every game, no exceptions, home or away. Then we would have more of an identity. Throw the white and maroon pants in the trash. We're supposed to be the GOLDEN Gophers, and when we don't wear gold pants on the road the only gold in the entire uniform is the M on the helmet. During our bowl game we looked more like Texas A&M or Miss St than Minnesota.

Ohio State and MSU lose big points in my book for those stupid stickers on their helmets. This isn't kindergarten.

I could care less if they wear gold pants or not. The new uni's look great in whatever combo they decide to go with!

I love how the Gopherhole guy ranks us #1 then everyone else has us #10-12. Oh well - who gives a %$#& about what anyone else says. Our jerseys are bomb.

I agree they look good no matter what pants they wear, but I think gold looks best. And call me crazy, but I think that the GOLDEN Gophers should just maybe wear GOLD pants.

I'm not sure how you rank behind Ohio St. or Purdue? I always thought those helmets and uniforms were blah. It's just Yarina's opinion I guess.

Agreed. With maroon jerseys home and white away.

The highest ranked uniforms seem to be the ones that are recognizable. Hard to recognize our unis when they change every game.

I'll tell you one thing the pukes from Beckyland and Corn Row City will be seeing the back of Berkley Edwards jersey as in " Gone to the House " !!!

Basically, all I've learned the past few weeks from these "national experts" is that if a college football team isn't winning, everything about it sucks, including the uniforms and the stadium. In other words, I've learned absolutely nothing from articles like this. Just filler from guys who need something to write about.

As for our uniforms, my favorites were actually the ones from the late 90s into the early 2000s. The ones we have right now aren't too bad, but the maroon is a little too dark for my liking.

hey MRJ,

your 2nd paragraph (unknowingly?) supports the hypothesis in the 1st...:p

How do you mean? Because I commented on the uniforms or because I said I don't like these as much as the late 90s or 2000s? Since the topic of the thread was about uniforms, I figured I'd give my two cents. Otherwise, I couldn't care less about how our uniforms supposedly stack up against the rest of conference. Not trying to start an argument, just curious...

I think he was indicating that it's ironic that you liked the uniforms from the years where the Gophers were enjoying eight win seasons.

Except for color Our uniforms are no different than Penn St's or Michigan's.

I guess I can see that. Having said that, I will say that my personal faves from the past 30-plus years were the old gold helmets and pants with the maroon jerseys in the early 90s (not the ones with the ridiculous block "M" across the shoulder pads, the ones prior to those). I think Wacker was the coach then and the team stunk. But I still liked the jerseys.

I loved the gold helmets and like the maroon color that went with them. I always thought that a team with the nicknamed golden gophers above all others ought to have gold helmets. Alas, people hated them.

Uniform rankings compiled by Big Ten writers, per BTN:

Go Gophers!!

No surprise, the order is generally in order of fan support / size of program.

My opinions: Ohio State's uniforms are the WORST in the conference. How boring can one get...combined with that god-awful mascot. Blahhhh. Michigan uniforms are the best, as much as I dislike Michigan. Good color scheme, great helmet design. As for our rivals, Iowa has a cool color scheme, but their jerseys are boring overall. Wisconsin can't do too much with the plain red-and-white scheme, but that helmet logo makes them look like a cartoon out there. Pathetic. Still better than that drab OSU crap, though. That said, both of those teams play winning football, so...whatever works, I guess.

As for the Gophers, I really don't understand the distaste of those uniforms from a lot of the writers. It can't be the color scheme, that works well. The all-gold uniforms indeed look silly, so if they're rating those, that's a fair excuse. But the Maroon-and-gold uniforms look stellar. Gotta be the whole strength-of-program factor.

"11. Minnesota: There’s always just way too much going on. And, it seems like they’re wearing something different every time I see them."

what a waste of time. who the hell cares what the uniform looks like? Does a cool uniform win games or lose them? Those writers must really need something to do.

In fashion, as in food, disagreement is inevitable and unresolvable. To me, our gold is overused and garish -- like gold-capped incisors. I'd much prefer us to emphasize the maroon, which I would also tone down to a burnt-red hue, and dull the gold down to a straw-like color. My list with comments:
PSU -- clean, team focused
OSU -- Love the grey secondary color
UW -- elegant
NE -- clean, simple
MSU -- unambiguous green
IU -- Ordinary without being elegant
UIowa -- Black before Labor Day? Gauch!
Gophers -- clash of two prominent colors, too busy
PU -- drab
NW -- Purple and Black? Looks like a king's funeral raiment
UIll -- orange and blue? Ick
UM -- hate the ugly helmet.

I think there are 479,001,600 ways one could order these twelve teams. I don't expect universal agreement on my ranking. Best wishes to all for a meaningful Independence Day.

I have opinions on this.

Our home look (maroon over gold) is pretty good now.

We should always wear gold pants.

Yeah, I agree. I think it was under Mason that the unis went back closer in style to the mid-to-late 80s teams under Holtz and Gutekuenst. Didn't have a problem with it, just liked the old golds better.

1. Penn State

3. Ohio State
4. Minnesota
5. Michigan
6. Iowa
7. Wisconsin
8. Michigan State
9. Indiana
10. Purdue
11. Illinois
12. Northwestern

Here's mine. Never been a huge fan of the OSU unis. Iowa shoots to the bottom because their current unis were simply Hayden Fry's copy of the Steelers. No tradition there. Purdue's are better than MSU, which is BORING. Wisconsin should figure out what their block W is supposed to be. I counted 5 different "W's" in their stadium.

3. Michigan
4. Minnesota
5. Ohio State
6. Wisconsin
7. Purdue
8. Michigan State

10. Indiana
11. Iowa

Personally I can't stand the OSU grey pants. I think the only school who should wear grey is Ole Miss. They look like civil war colors to me and Ohio was a northern state.
