BTN: 2012-13 Predictions: Tubby COY, Trevor First Team, Gophers to finish 4th, & more

Lotta love for Minnesota!

Top-4 Finish
1st Team ALL-B1G: Trevor
2nd Team ALL-B1G: Dre
COY: Tubby
Most Improved Player: Dre

Poll Options:
Rebounds Leader: Trevor
Blocks Leader: Trevor, Rodney
Steals Leader: Rodney, Austin (Dark Horse)

Surprised Rodney wasn't even a projected Honorable Mention ALL-B1G

Great to see all the love for the Gophers. Next season couldn't come soon enough. I'm a little surprised there was no mention of Mitch McGary in any of that. He will probably be among the leading rebounders in the conference as a freshman. Might even be freshman of the year. I think he's a little bit more college ready than Yogi, but who knows. Won't be surprised either way. Both players are going to be very good.

Yarina is just a Tubby apologist! Injuries don't matter! No excuses! The Tubby Haters® will not like this prediction at all!

Eh.. put it this way: if the guy who wrote that or anyone else wants to put money on the Gophers being 4th place or better next year, I'll gladly take the other side of that bet.

Gary Harris, too.

Nice to see the Gophers picked that high, but until proven otherwise (during the season), I can't pick them ahead of Michigan State or Wisconsin. Even so, assuming Trevor comes back & is healthy, Rodney is back, and there are no surprises of the bad kind during the offseason, Gophers have an experienced team that appears more than capable of competing well in a strong B1G. We should never hear the "we're young" or "we're inexperienced" card played from anyone next season, players, coaches & fans alike.

At this early juncture, no reason to think this team shouldn't finish north of .500 (I'm thinkin' 10-8/11-7) during the B1G regular season for the first time in Tubby's tenure.

They'd at least appreciate the expectations and lack of mediocrity accepting lol

Good lord, they got a registered trademark for that? I wouldn't be surprised.

Once again GW brings his added sunshine to GH. The Gophers could have 5 returning All Big 10 players and he would say the same thing. You should change your id to Warrior as you can't find anything positive to say about the Gophers ever.

I'd feel comfortable with putting the Gophers ahead of Wisky for next season. I think the loss of Jordan Taylor is going to take a big toll on that team. That and the way we played them this year without Trevor, and before Dre and Rodney really stepped, up shows me this team can play with them. Whether or not they finish in the top 4 is something I hope the Gophers can make a run at.

They did have him as All Big Ten Defensive though.

One thing that surprised me was the poll they put up regarding which team would win the conference. Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio State got a total of about 41% of the vote, meaning that voters thought it was more likely that none of those three win the conference, and that one of either Michigan State, Minnesota, Wisconsin etc. is more likely to finish above all three of those teams. I realize fan bias must factor in somewhat, but it seems kind of insane that voters find the most likely outcome to be that neither of Indiana, Michigan, or Ohio State win the conference next year. I voted for Indiana myself.

I voted on just about all the polls that were there, but not for leading shot blocker because I'm torn between whether it will be Rodney Williams or Trevor Mbakwe. :) Honestly, I don't know who is better. I feel like it won't be Berggren, I don't know much about Payne, and I know Zeller is a great player, but I don't know how good he is at blocking shots, so I could maybe vote for Zeller.

I also didn't vote for leading scorer. Out of the five options listed, I don't think it will be Tim Frazier or Drew Crawford, and I feel like Brandon Paul wasn't a dominant offensive player outside of his 43 point performance against Ohio State. I don't know whether to go with Cody Zeller or Deshaun Thomas.

My votes:

Big Ten Champ: Indiana
Leading scorer: undecided
Leading rebounder: Trevor Mbakwe
Leading shot blocker: undecided (feels good to have to choose between two Gophers!)
Assist leader: Aaron Craft
Steals leader: Aaron Craft
Leading 3-point shooter: Jordan Hulls (I think this was for most 3 pointers scored)

Leading 3-point shooter was a somewhat difficult one to decide because there isn't a Hoffarber or Diebler sort of guy in the Big Ten, a 3 point specialist. Welch had one of the higher 3-point shooting percentages in the Big Ten this year if I recall correctly, but depending on the amount of playing time he gets, I'm not sure he will be competing for most 3 pointers made. I also feel like Dre could compete in this category, he's a good long range shooter.

Predictions? Too early - its time for Gopher football.

Eh.. put it this way: if the guy who wrote that or anyone else wants to put money on the Gophers being 4th place or better next year, I'll gladly take the other side of that bet.

From one betting man to another; lets works something out.

They go 4th place or better, $100 dollars to my charity of choice (Gillette Children's Foundation). They take 5th, we split, each put $100 or $50 dollars to each others charity. 6th place or over I pay $100 to your charity of choice.

Deal?

Now that we pretty much know all the important Big Ten draft decisions (will assume Mbakwe, Williams and Hardaway return), an early and revised projection of the B1G standings. Dropping MSU a bit for now because of Nix uncertainty, though I suspect he'll be back after a few-games suspension.

1. Indiana (NCAA)
2. Michigan (NCAA)
3. Wisconsin (NCAA)
4. Ohio State (NCAA)
5. Michigan State (NCAA)
6. Gophers (NCAA)
7. Iowa (NCAA First Four/NIT bubble)
8. Purdue (NIT)
9. Northwestern (NIT or perhaps B1G's first foray into CBI?)
10. Illinois
11. Penn State
12. Nebraska

I like your list except Wisconsin, I didn't see a true pg play other than Taylor, so I'm not sure if they have to go with a freshmen there. I'd move Wisconsin down to 5 or 6 and move ohio st, mich st, and maybe us ahead of them. Otherwise it looks good. If there is a darkhorse it would be Illinois, they still have talent.

Good point about Illinois. With the guys they have coming back they could thrive under Groce's system. Very guard-oriented at Ohio U with DJ Cooper & Armon Bassett a couple years ago, Cooper, Offutt and Kellogg this past season.

I would imagine Paul, Richardson & Bertrand will like playing for Groce.

This is not the year to sell the Badgers short. Losing Taylor will of course hurt, but so would losing Leuer, Nankvil, Harris, Taylor, Tucker, etc., etc.

They have the highest rated recruit that Bo has ever recruited coming in, if you pay attention to that kind of stuff. They also have three senior front court players that have logged a ton of minutes, one of whom may have trouble finding playing time. It will be the deepest team the Badgers have had under Ryan and he still only may play 8 guys.

As for point guard, remember the name George Marshall.

Big 10 is going to be a lot of fun next year. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Not true. Brian Butch was rated more highly by most, if not all, of the major recruiting services.

Is it ever? Haha.

I know Sam Dekker is a highly touted guy, but he will also be a freshman, and freshmen, especially freshmen of his caliber, can definitely have an impact (Sullinger, Zeller, Burke). However, I think I have seen that Wisconsin plays freshmen less than any other team in the Big Ten. In my short few years of watching college basketball, I don't believe I have seen Bo bring in a stud recruit, so I don't know if he would be willing to play a freshman if he were good enough. Do you see Dekker getting a lot of minutes next year?

First, I don't like Becky. At all.

But, remember that they have a few seniors in Evans and the two Minnesota forwards... and then two juniors in Gasser and Brust... four of those five averaged at least 25 mpg and Brust had more than 20... that is a TON of experience returning... and that's before talking about their many young guys who could step up (still think redshirt frosh Uthoff can be very good for their team, and will have little pressure on him this year.. could be a guy that plays a decent amount and is extremely efficient when on the floor in 2012-13). They'll be fine.

I'm in. We've got a deal (with a $50/$50 combo in a 5th place scenario.. finish to be decided by BTT seeding).

How about I pick the charity if you both lose.

No thanks. I'm afraid you're a bit too granola for my tastes and might choose a "charity" I'd be uncomfortable with. If you'd like the same bet with me as Clem's Gophers have, though, I'm in (and you can pick the charity if you win).

Wasn't directed at me, but I've seen Dekker play a few times. He's the real deal and will, IMO, likely be their best player next year. If he's not a starter and getting a lot of minutes I'll be fairly surprised. I don't like the thought of playing against the combination of him and Koenig once he gets there. I still have faith in the Gophers though. I look forward to beating them next year and finishing ahead of them in the standings.

I have to agree with you. Many years ago one of my closest sources of business, who played for Bennet at one of his earlier stops, told me what a great coach he was. I was hoping Bo would not be nearly as good. Let's roll the ball out there and see what happens!

George Marshall, the 2 star recruit out of illinois, rated the 58th best pg in the country (ESPN). Sure everyone is a diamond in the ruff I guess.

PG is the most important position in college basketball. If you replace Taylor with a freshmen wing in Dekkar, and i'm only dropping Wisconsin from their 4th place finish this year to 5th or 6th. Sounds reasonable to me. I may be a homer in picking the gophers to possible finish higher. For that to happen, they have to really take care of things at home. They didn't have a homecourt advantage this year.

Clem's.. haven't seen you around much this year. You checking your PM's? I'm ready to tell you who I'd like you to donate to.

Ohio St. was better than expected. I nailed Illinois as a darkhorse. Wisconsin finished tied for 4th and it wasn't Marshall it was Traevon who led them. Selection you had gophers at 6th while i wanted them up a spot so you got that one. Northwestern's injuries caused them to fall a few spots, other than that. So Wisconsin and Illinois exceeded expations and the gophers didn't meet theirs.
