Bryant Allen named St Louis area BB player of the year

Allen must be a really good football player if he is the best St. Louis area BB player and signed a LOI to play football.

Brewster

So where will this kid play for Brewster? I assume he would be a wide out.

He is 6 feet and 160 pounds. I cant wait to see him playing for Tubby. I hope that works out.

So if you're the tubster and you've got a pretty good walk on football palyer probably coming in late, what do you do with him? he'll be joining you at the end of the nc season and beginning of the B10 season. It's unlikely he'll get many minutes. But he's talented. Do you RS him the first year and keep his eligibility for when he's a likley contributor, or do you treat him like a traditional walk on without consideration for his eligibility. If you RS the kid in year five you're likely to get him for the whole season in what would be his most productive year as he's done with FB and a fifth year senior.

I don't think you'll see any redshiriting of any Gophers. Tubby's not a redshirting kind of coach, unless it's for medical reasons. He's very hesitant about such things. Besides, 5 years is a long time down the road. There's no guarantee Tubby will even be here in 5 years.

In this case we're not talking about a schollie. i totally agree that unless you're talking big man in a deep roster you should never RS. you're just locking up a schollie for another year with an athlete who's proven he's not as good as what you usually can get. In this case, IMHO, they will get little out of the guy in year one, and he's not tying up a BB schollie. you actually gain a great athlete in the fifth year at no cost to the program just by exhibiting a little patience. As far as Tubby being still around, he'll make the best decision for the team regardless of his plans, he's a professional. bigger question is if Allen is still around, my thought is that if he's not then he didn't amount to much, or he's in the NFL. So to me the only risk is developing a kid for a senior year that never happens. A pretty small risk.

Here's hoping Allen is as good as advertised on the basketball court, gets to the U and decides basketball is the sport he'd rather pursue long-term. If he's good enough, Tubby can give him a scholly after the first year or two and that will free one up for Brew.

Actually, if I remember correctly, he can't do that. There is a "priority" system in place to determine which sport a scholarship counts against if a player is on multiple teams. Football is at the top of the list, so any athlete who plays football and has a scholarship counts against the 85 player limit.

If I read this correctly you are openly cheering against the success of a player on our football team. I hope he plays both sports for all four years and I would be very disappointed if he doesn't work out in football because he is an electric player with the ball in his hands.

No, I said I hope changes his mind once he's here. That doesn't mean he has to fail on the football field.

Who knows? Maybe a couple years into college, he decides he really misses playing hoops full time. Because my interests lie more in Gopher hoops than football, I'd rather have him full-tilt basketball and no football.

Not sure how much Gopher basketball fans could expect out of the young man if he's joining the basketball team in late November or December every year. Maybe we'd get lucky and he'd give the Gophers production the likes of Charlie Ward (FSU) or Julius Peppers (UNC) did, but that's more the exception than the rule. If he's as good as we're hearing, I'd be curious to see the results if he gave his full attention to basketball (and studies of course;)).

As I love Gopher football and bball equally, I just want him to be successful regardless of which arena he chooses.

I guess failure was a bad term, "hoping he quits the football team" is maybe the appropriate phrase.

I want to see success for both programs so I definitely can't agree with your sentiment. We don't know what we have with Cobbs yet so I can't say I'm hoping Allen is the answer at PG. I personally hope Cobbs is a star and Allen is a contributor and I'm thankful he'll be around for March Madness.

I'm not clear on what a red shirt is in the absence of a schollie. He has a number of years of eligibility, and a certain period for using up that eligibility. If he doesn't play in the first year (only proactices), then he hasn't used any eligibility, right? NOrmally the clock for the period starts when you first play, but I don't know if being an athlete that played in a different sport has an effect on when the clock starts.

If he was offered a scholership for basketball and gave up football it would be okay. He can't be on a basketball scholership if he continues to play football, I believe.
