"... Allen set a new Missouri Class 2 state record for the 300-meter hurdles and came home with four gold medals. In fact, Allen set a new record in the 300-meter hurldes twice during the state championship meet last week. He recorded a time of 38.95 seconds in the preliminaries and then shattered that record with a 38.23 clocking in the finals.

In addition to the record-breaking performances in the 300-meter hurdles, Allen also brought home gold as a member of the Blue Devils’ state champion 4x100-meter, 4x200-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams. "

And what may be an added plus, "Did we mention, that the thought of Allen in maroon and gold also probably brings a smile to Tubby Smith’s face? Allen is planning to participate in basketball as a walk-on."

Cant wait to see him running up and down the raised floor !!

Allen's times

I posted on the Football Board in response to a similar post that Allen competes in Class 1 in Missouri track/field, which is the smallest of the 4 Missouri classes. His state record in Class 1 in the 300 hurdes is not the state record for all classes. There are a least a dozen winners in the state championship meets in the other classes over the past 15 years who have had better times than his new state record in Class 1. This doesn't diminish his accomplishments but does put his speed into perspective. He is fast though, no doubt about that.

Thanks

Thanks for those details. I still have to think, if Bryant gets on the floor he will be the fastest guy in the game. 90 feet isnt 300 meters but after watching some of his hoops and football clips this guy is fast and quick!

I cant wait to see him this fall.

I'm not sure how fast Cobbs is, but with Nolen and Allen, I'd say we have some pretty quick PGs. I think Allen will get more playing time than expected. Obviously playing football and being a walk-on bball player will affect his pt somewhat, but we can already see he's a better shooter than Nolen. It would be a good change of pace to get him in there to actually have a scoring threat at pg (obviously Cobbs can score too).

Look up Kevin Payton's New Jersey high school state records in the 400. I think you'll find he was faster than Bryant. I was all excited about that when I first read them. But it turned out to be pretty much meaningless.

Bryant is a little guy who, assuming we go bowling, won't really start practicing with the team until Big Ten season. I'm guessing he'll be a valuable practice player, but will be very surprised if plays a significant role in the games. And I'd be delighted to be wrong about the latter.

I don't think quickness or the ability to run the floor was Payton's problem. In fact I think it was one of his strengths. so I wouldn't disregard the value of speed based on Payton's other limitations.

I completely agree. My point is that being a ton faster than most everyone else in long sprints doesn't provide anywhere near the edge needed to overcome other difficulties.

agreed, some people take these little grains of truth and come up with harmful or incorrect conclusions.
