In match 1 the Gophers dropped 2 of 3 sets to South Dakota State. The Gophers won set one easily. Set 2 was not good as Coach Cook played everyone and the connections just weren't there. Set three was also ragged and the Gophers seemed listless and uninterested.

Individually Stella was solid again with good ball movement. Lauren Crowl played as well as I've seen her play and Jordan Taylor was also very solid. Acevedo was way off her game and Gilk struggled as well. When Georgia Lee was in the game the offense was completely stagnant.

Julia Hanson did not play in either match after warming up for both. She looked fine in warm ups so I assume this is just a precaution. Wucherer was in street clothes again.

Match #2 with Creighton was more fun. The Gophers played with more fire in this one. They lost the first set 25-18 if my memory is correct. Creighton defense was the difference. It's very hard to get the ball on the ground against them. The Gopher had control of set 2 until 23-19 when they allowed Creighton to run off 6 straight points to steal the set. Coach Cook didn't go as deep down the bench this time although Schnichels and Engeman saw extended time. The Gopher won set 3 25-23 after nearly blowing a 23-19 lead again.

Stella was again solid although her sets were not quite as well placed. Acevedo bounced back and played a very solid match. All of the middles were solid. McKenna Garr got a lot of court time and played really well. Gilk struggled mightily in this match. The last 3 points Creighton won in set 2 were all Gilk hitting errors.

Overall this was a little dissapointing. SDSU is a good team but they should have been able to handle them and did not. Creighton is very good and in set 1 when it was pretty much starters vs starters Creighton was the better team. Having Hanson and Wucherer would have helped. I'm not sure if Creighton was at full strength or not so all I can really say is today they were the better team when it really counted.

Special props to the gentleman who brought his trumpet and played the Rouser during the Creighton match. That was cool.

If anyone else was at the match please share your thoughts and observations

I haven't been to any matches this Spring. I have been reading Gopherhole posts and those on Volleytalk Proboards. I have felt that the overall expectations for this year's Volleyball team have been way too high. This weekend we saw better teams and I for one am not suprised by what I have read vs SDSU and Creighton matches.

1 - IMO The only two top impact starters returning this season are Hanson and Myers (transfer in).
2 - Both setters do not have the starting experience to take over a match should something happen to Stella. There is only so much a setter can do, IF THE PASS IS NOT THERE. Also, Stella needs to work on defense and blocking and I haven't read much about her serving.
3 - Z and KT still need to improve. Not so sure they will all that much this season. Maybe both Junior players have peaked or close to it at their overall potential.
4 - Grote serving and offensively brought a lot to the team. I'm still not sold on Crowl and I haven't seen Gilk play. It sounds to me like there is a lot of room for both these players to grow into the Opp position and one of them is a Redshirt Senior.
5 - I think the middle will be fine this season, if Minatee, Myers and Taylor can all stay healthy. I have a lot of faith in our middle coach.
6 - Kinney and Wookie haven't been in the mix yet and that will change the whole dynamic once they are, if they are.

My gut is telling me that recruiting really needs to start improving sooner than what most fans are believing or thinking. Also, every season we need to see a blue chip player or two added to the roster like Hebert was great at or a top 15 ranked player like Hugh was able to recruit. KCook really has his work cut out for him in both RECRUITING and DEVELOPING.

I think a lot of Minnesota fans are hoping and feeling, with all these Minnesota Volleyball players on the roster, we can have the success we had when Hugh first came on board. I just don't believe we are going to catch lightening in the bottle twice this time around. Hope I am wrong.

Mostly good points. Stella is a good blocker already. Her serve is OK. She doesn't make service errors but I would like to see a little more pace. Her back row defense is also OK. Not great but not horrible.

I'd like to see Z and KT take a step forward off last year. So far I'd say that's still a work in progress. McKenna Garr looks like a player. Perhaps she'll help solidify the back row as early as this season.

At hitter we know we can count on Julia Hanson. If Wookie can get healthy she locks down spot #2. After that it's anyone guess right now. Acevedo looks the beat so far but Crowl, Gilk and probably Kinney will be in mix. Whoever it is needs to step up because so far olits just OK and OK is not good enough.

The middles will be solid. I think Minatee will need to fight for her job. Taylor is really good and Engeman is playing great this spring.

Ultimately we won't know how good this team is until live ammo starts flying in late August.
