This is a condemnation of the job BTN did in presenting the Gopher’s game Saturday. The broadcast team was woefully unprepared, doing a disservice to the B1G, in general, and Minnesota in particular.

This was not BTN’s A team and can’t be compared to a top-notch network like ESPN, CBS, NBC or FOX. With so many games broadcast around the country, the quality of the talent pool is sapped. As I became increasingly frustrated with the announcers lack of knowledge of the players, it was obvious the entire crew had no idea how some prep time is vital.

Either they don’t have a spotter, the spotter they have is incompetent, or Mason and LaPanta ignored him/her. Maybe the tackler on a three-yard run in the middle isn’t a big deal, but on numerous key plays they didn’t credit big plays. Cockran's tip for Wilson’s pick was a great play, a huge play. They credit Ekpe, never get it right with replays. Those announcers are local, not imported. They should know the players as well as anyone.

Mason's call was so technical on MTSU’s second TD. “They have three right, four left, run right...” If the color man is a 30-year head coach, I would expect a little more. How did this man ever make in-game adjustments? That's the fun part of the Gopher Weekly TV show, where they go to the film room and Killer has a clicker.

Throughout the broadcast they rarely identified the key defenders for Minnesota. Just awful and weak.

You are correct!

I also thought they were poor, at best.

They never even talked about the fact that we had 3 true freshmen playing defensive tackle for a lot of the game. Seems that like that would merit at least a comment.

I also didn't find out until after the game that we had 3 starting defensive backs in the locker room for treatment during parts of the second half. No mention at all from the announcers.

It appeared to me they credited numerous tackles to the wrong player.

When you watch one of the national games the announcers seem to analyze so much better! Maybe someday we'll get there.

It's no different with basketball, those BTN announcers are absolutely the worst! It's like they get paid by the word, not quality of work!

No surprise here. The BTN is a totally third rate organization. Don't forget that they couldn't even send the game signal to the right provider(s) for most of the 1st quarter.

It sounds like a bad day at the office for Glen Mason. I was at the game and didn't see the broadcast. Was he fair with the U of M? He seemed to lay shots in when possible as a BTN studio analyst, but with Maturi, Brewster, and Bruininks all gone it perhaps no longer feels as personal. How did Anthony LaPanta fare?

Fox Sports 1 will have Tim Brando and Brady Quinn on the Gophers-TCU game this Saturday.

Mase also went all creepy old guy after the interview with Maxx's parents. Said his dad really "out punted the coverage with that one" and then it got all weird in the booth as he was complimenting her looks.

LaPanta was pretty brutal. He got several names wrong and had trouble identifying players (and coaches--Jerry Stockstill?).

I could really do without Mase doing color for Gophers games. You can just feel the smugness coming through the television.

Grimm (although better than Dave Lee) is a bit annoying on the radio - spends way too much time giving is interpretation of the replay official - disagreeing with Darryl all the time too - oh well - they are not all vern lundquist

That was awkward. Side commentary like that is completely unnecessary.

That said, I guess I was just glad we didn't get the Beth Mowins-Joey Galloway combo. Bleh.

I agree Beth & Joey are not an enjoyable alternative, but because she is trying to overcome gender bias, I think she works really hard and is prepared. Referring to someone making a play for the Gophers as "the defender," and not later identifying that player is unacceptable. What do they think their job is?

I forgot to mention they didn't let us know DC was over 100 until the second half, I think. I know it was forever. They did at one point flash a graphic with his career stats, perfect opportunity to say "including over 100 today." Sigh. DC recovered their onside kick. How about "DC on the hands team makes a clean recovery"?

Yeah, I'm not so sure you read my post correctly. I want nothing to do with the Mowins-Galloway broadcast, they are awful (perhaps in part BECAUSE Mowins comes off as trying TOO hard). At least I can laugh at Grinnin' Glen's lack of prep.

I like Mase as a broadcasting guy,the rest of the BTN production is typically a waste though. I was really pissed when Northwestern was on 4 BTN channels and the Gophers were on none. In addition, it sounds like Gopher hockey will continue to be marginalized on television as a result of the BTN/BTHC.

I think Grimm is great aside from his constant ref bitching.

It'll be interesting to see how well the Fox Sports 1 announcing team does on Saturday. I expect them to be better than any of the BTN crews then again the bar isn't very high.

Bring back AggieVision!!!

...it's just so gripping...

You'd just think Mason, who coached at MN, lives in MN, and works for the conference network would know a little bit more about the team.

Please don't bring up Mike "terrible call by the officials" Grimm. The guy literally spends more time complaining about the officiating then he does actually calling the play-by-play.

Between Grimm and Paul Allen, I think MN may be cornering the market on bad FB announcers. And let's not forget Mr. Country Hearth Bread calling St. Thomas games for 'CCO.
