This is a condemnation of the job BTN did in presenting the Gopher’s game Saturday. The broadcast team was woefully unprepared, doing a disservice to the B1G, in general, and Minnesota in particular.
This was not BTN’s A team and can’t be compared to a top-notch network like ESPN, CBS, NBC or FOX. With so many games broadcast around the country, the quality of the talent pool is sapped. As I became increasingly frustrated with the announcers lack of knowledge of the players, it was obvious the entire crew had no idea how some prep time is vital.
Either they don’t have a spotter, the spotter they have is incompetent, or Mason and LaPanta ignored him/her. Maybe the tackler on a three-yard run in the middle isn’t a big deal, but on numerous key plays they didn’t credit big plays. Cockran's tip for Wilson’s pick was a great play, a huge play. They credit Ekpe, never get it right with replays. Those announcers are local, not imported. They should know the players as well as anyone.
Mason's call was so technical on MTSU’s second TD. “They have three right, four left, run right...” If the color man is a 30-year head coach, I would expect a little more. How did this man ever make in-game adjustments? That's the fun part of the Gopher Weekly TV show, where they go to the film room and Killer has a clicker.
Throughout the broadcast they rarely identified the key defenders for Minnesota. Just awful and weak.
