Brian Wilson, the founder of the Beach Boys, has died at 82

This was my Dad's favorite band.
Likewise, the Beach Boys were my Dad's favorite band as well. This is quite a gut punch.

I really don't remember a time in my life growing up that their music was not present. This week because Don't Worry Baby was referenced on The Tony Kornheiser Show (as a response to the Ronette's Be My Baby) it sent me into an hour long rabbit hole on youtube listening their music.

In 2001 finally got to see him live in a Co-headline show with another legend, Paul Simon. I took my old man as his birthday gift.

Really fun, while Brian was not necessary animated on stage he had a really professional backing band and he was more engaging than I expected.

This was not played that night, but still a classic.

One of my favorite groups as well from the 60's. Loved the "California Sound" from them, Jan & Dean and a few others.
The arrangements and harmonies Brian put together were amazing.
I saw the Mike Love, Bruce Johnston, John Stamos touring group a couple years ago and were still fun to listen to. They put on a good show.
RIP Brian.

Beach Boys new drummer, Jon Bolton is a distant-ish family friend and it's wild how he was added to the band. He is a well-known regional drummer in Seattle, playing the upper NW music scene for years. During Covid, his wife started posting videos of him drumming on IG and TikTok. Well John Stamos saw the videos, DM'd him and asked for a call. Bolton thought it was someone playing a joke on him, but agreed to take a Facetime call and a few minutes later he was face timing with Stamos! Stamos invited him to jam with the band, a week later he was signed as the new touring drummer with the Beach Boys and has now become very close with Stamos.

Go Gophers!!

Great memory😃

There was an excellent documentary on the making of Pet Sounds and the process of how meticulous Brian was. Worth tracking down and watching if you haven’t seen it before👍

Prior to its release, they held a listing party, which Paul and John attended. After Don’t Worry Baby played, Paul looked at John and said, so that what a perfect record sounds like😃

It's been a while, but I did see the Pet Sounds documentary.

Quite a response from Paul & John to put forth Sgt Pepper's.

The only use I ever found for the Beach Boys was when we were out on the boat water skiing on the Whitefish Chain. Definitely some good music while you're lounging around on a boat in the summer out on the water.

One of the greatest! He wrote some perfect songs. That's not easy.

I just deep dived the band last night. Thought I knew it all. Brian was way more messed up for a while than I ever imagined. Glad he was able to get his life back.

I think this clip is from the doc.

Genius always makes their process seem so normal, even though they see things and take avenues the rest of us mortals don’t.

Genius pushing genius - how splendid😃

If you haven’t watched the biopic on Brian and his demons, please put Love & Mercy (2014) on the top of your list. Stars the amazing Paul Dano, as the younger version and a better than normal John Cusack as the elder version with Elizabeth Banks as well.

It’s not as flashy as other releases, but gets it, his genius and mental illness, pitch perfectly IMO. I watched that and Pet Sounds documentary back to back, a couple summers ago and was in heaven for the next week.

Produced and directed by current Twins Co-Owner, Bill Pohlad.

One of the several perfect songs from Pet Sounds is Caroline, No. Decades later, pretty amazing live version:

Watched it twice.

Time for Danny! Danny is a pit bull when a person colors outside the lines. Almost time for Dan to let Denny Green have it!

Brian didn't give any of the others credit for that one. In fact, he considered Pet Sounds more of a solo album than a Beach Boys album. I disagree with Carl's voice being so important.

Love and Mercy

Upon further review, Love and Mercy WAS played at the 2001 Xcel show I attended, as I originally thought. I looked at Setlist.com incorrectly by not scrolling beyond the Main Set.

User Error.

It was the encore as Jon Bream pointed out.
