I notice how a lot of people make comparisons to Ferentz's, Alvarez's, and Masonz's :)p) first years as head coach and how Brewster could be on par to do the same. Want a contemporary comparison? Look at Mike Gundy's OSU Cowboys:

Year 1 - 4-7 No bowl
Year 2 - 7-6 Independence Bowl W
Year 3 - 7-6 Insight Bowl W
Year 4 - 9-4 Holiday Bowl L

According to the stats displayed through 2008, his 4th year, Gundy only beat one team in the Top 25. That was No 25 K-State, by 2 points in 2007. Why are we out for Brewster's head again? I mean, we are Minnesota, not Okie St. They lie in part of the country where college football is more important than (enter religious figure of choice).

Sure, the records aren't dead on, but you can't argue with the obvious relation in performance, as well as a comparable record through their first three years. Don't nitpick on our 1-11 though, Brew was a first year coach and Gundy served as a college QB coach and O coordinator for a long time before taking the reigns.

Point - We'll be ok. Quit being so goddamn Minnesotan. Enjoy the ride. Bitter people...do whatever. This post doesn't matter to you anyways.

Since Zook's Illini team has gone downhill I guess we're not using him to compare Brewster to anymore.......

he's respectful to the media. HE'S RESPECTFUL TO THE PUBLIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for that Frozen. Good to see some people here who have some perspective, and Mike "I'm a Man, I'm 40" Gundy is a decent analog to Brewster.

Now, this is a fair comparison because Gundy took over a team that went 7-5 and played in the Alamo Bowl the year before.

Take a look at Dave Wannstedt over at Pitt...Alot of people were calling for his head after his 3rd season:
5-6 (4-3)
6-6 (2-5)
5-7 (3-4)
9-4 (5-2)
9-1

Brews first year was much much worse, but Pitt had won the Big East the year prior to Wannstedt becoming coach. Walt Harris left to coach Stanford.

I kind of feel dirty for making this comparison, but...

Barry Alvarez's first three years look remarkably familiar:
1990: 1–10 (0-8, 10th)
1991: 5–6 (2-6, T-8th)
1992: 5–6 (3-5, T-6th)

Won the Big Ten and the Rose Bowl the next year.

I think that Wanny record is what we will see with Brewster.

Could be a 5-7 season next year...there will be weaping and knashing of teeth over it...but 2011 will be a good year for the GGs.

frozengopher...I agree.

I don't think people are hung-up on Brewster's win-loss record.

What troubles people is the absence of The Fundamentals in the program.

what troubles me most is his teams go downhill during the season. We don't see players progressing. Weber has gone downhill as has Carufel, Green, etc.

I'm not horribly familiar with the rise of Wisconsin at that time - do you know what the WI squad looked like in 1992? More specifically, did they play a lot of seniors in 92 or were they young on the filed that year? What kinds of improvement were shown between 1991 and 1992 despite the same overall record?

I'm wondering if there are any interesting comparison's between this year's Gopher squad and the 1992 Badger team?

The Badgers were always the nations greatest team with the nations greatest fans, who always attended every game......and, regrettably, prior to the 90's I used to walk through entire empty sections with my Coke rack. "Cooooooke Here!" good times.

Another note: someone call KFAN and tell the Fargo Flash it is pronounced Mar-kweece not Mar-keece.

In addition, if Gundy beats Oklahoma next week, his may be in a BCS bowl.

And, he was under fire after a couple of years, too. Definite rumblings that they wanted him out. In fact, prior to the 2008 season, Gundy was on SI's Top Ten coaches on the hot seat.

Carufel-Green

I don't believe Carufel and Green went downhill this season. I believe they both suffered injuries and were slowed down by them. Green had surgery this past week and will be back in December.
Weber also had off-season surgery that might have effected his play somewhat.

Awesome post, great thread. Point well-taken--and there are plenty of other examples out there to back it up. One needs to judge a football program on a large scale over several years and from a distance. Many things BESIDES W/L RECORD need to be considered, and they're more intricate than "this player isn't playing well," or "I didn't like the gameplan and/or play-calling in this one certain game." Tough to do for a fan, I know...football is the only sport where we're given only 10-16 opportunities a year to watch our team and a WEEK between contests to analyze every detail. Makes perspective a tough thing to find...

What troubles people is the absence of The Fundamentals in the program.

That's because people look for ways to justify things.......

Some fundamentals. You have to be blind to a whole lot to only see doom and gloom with this program. You have to be incredibly short sighted to not see the talent level increasing. You have to be ignorant to not see that we are only using a small fraction of that talent while achieving a six win season and not see a sunny day on the horizon. We played like crap and did just as well as most every gopher team has done in the last forty years. And like the fat girl to the ugly girl upon being called fat, at least i can go on a diet.

This team can improve on their deficiencies. The better talent will see more of the field. Fisch and Brew will grow as coaches.

Stay the course.

Everything is going just fine. No need to panic.

Give Brewster a few more years.

Once the players are in place from his spectacular recruiting classes, everything will fall into place.

So what if Gray can't throw a pass? The forward pass is overrated.

All is well.
