Dave Mona opened the Sports Huddle segment by saying, what stood out after yesterday's scrimmage . . ."The Gophers are bigger and faster!"
Brewster comments:
1) "The defense has achance to be the defense we want it to be" . . . kids are extremely fast.
2) Wants the kids competing for jobs . . . "The attitude and effort of the players is outstanding."
3) On the defensive front: Brewster singled out Garrick Brown and Eric Small. Also complimented Kirksey and Jewhan Edwards. Edwards caught a tipped pass yesterday and returned it for a touchdown.
4) Likes Lee Campbell and also spoke highly about the speed of Spencer Reeves and Keanon Cooper. He also said Maresh is looking good and is progressing nicely.
5) Said Kevin Whaley did a nice job yesterday . . . needs to get bigger and stronger, however.
6) Said defense is a lilttle ahead of the offense at this time, however, he really likes the front five . . . 10 minutes after the conclusion of the scrimmage, the offensive line was watching video replays of the day's scrimmage. Jeff Wills is going to be a good player. Again, he said he likes the size, effort, speed and athleticism of the team and especially that of the front five.
7) Likes the coaching staff and their experience: "The kids feed off the coaches." "I really like this team - on and off the field." He went on to credit the coaches in developing and influencing the players.
8) Looking forward to the outdoor environment of the spring game, which is free and will be held at St. Thomas University on Saturday, April 25 at 1:30 p.m. He said it will be a fun time for the players and fans in an intimate environment.
9) Hartman said and Brewster confirmed that Garry Dinardo said the Gophers are bigger and much more athletic than last year, Dinardo, "You're going to be an improved team."
10) Brewster: "Recruiting is constantly on my mind." "We're recruiting good student athletes." He went on to say they're receiving great response in Texas, Florida, California, and St. Louis. He also said they heard from a player in New Jersey that became interested in the Gophers after viewing Brewster.com.
11) The importance of leadership was discussed. There are 28 seniors on this years squad, which is extremely important, according to Brewster. Leadership from the upperclassmen will determine how successful the team is this year.
12) After Sid asked about the past season redshirts, Brewster identified some key players:
"Keanon Cooper is a special player."
Kim Royston has had a tremendous impact on the defense . . . great communication skills.
Anthony Jacobs starting now and is one of the strongest players on the team.
Matt Carufel, experience with a tremendous attitude and work ethic; wants to improve and learn.
MarQuies Gray, although not a redshirt, he has tremendous skills and athleticism. will play.
Ryan Grant: "Solid linebacker" from a great family. "I like everything about the young guy."
Some of the program hightlights. Brewster was on for a full half-hour.
Go Gophers!!
