Whether or not Brewster is here in 2011 hinges SQUARELY on the actions of Jed Fisch and Tim Davis between now and next August.

Brewster has done his job for the most part. He was charged largely with upgrading the talent and I think most would agree that he's done that in spades. You don't have to look any further than the depth of the roster at most every position. There's not a doubt in my mind that this team has the talent to COMPETE.

But Fisch and Davis were brought in here for one reason and one reason only; to toughen up the offensive line and make this more of a pro-style offense.

In my opinion, the person who has failed miserably in this whole show is Tim Davis. The offensive line returned almost everybody from last year, added some fairly highly touted folks like Carufel and Wills, and the offensive line was the worst that I have ever seen. The O-line play affected this entire squad, from shattering Weber's poise and confidence, to the defense having to be on the field WAY WAY too much.

Fisch and Davis have a month of bowl practices, all of spring ball, as well as an entire offseason to re-evaluate themselves and their play-calling to get things rolling into next season.

It doesn't get any more simple than this:

If Fisch succeeds, Brewster succeeds, and rightfully so. If Fisch fails, they'll all be unemployed next winter.

Very well said. I agree with the entire post.

I have a feeling Gjere won't be the only new face on the OL next year. Too bad for Coach Brewster that Gjere, Allen, Olson, Michels, and Campion will only be frosh because his fate will likely be tied to finding a running game. In terms of recruiting service rankings, he's got some decent young linemen that might be 2-3 years away from making an impact when he needs them delivering next year.

Harry Truman we need you now.

The buck stops here. Brewster is the coach. Davis was his hire. Fisch was his hire. Brewster is responsible, period. Brewster has not done his job, not even close. He's been a better recruiter than we've had in the past, but that wasn't exactly a high bar to clear.

That doesn't mean fire him now, but shifting the blame is pure chicken*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#, and I'm pretty sure everyone except Maturi would agree with that, including Brewster himself. Maturi created this mess by hiring Brewster in the first place. And Brewster has gone on to create the mess we find ourselves in now, and he probably has one more season to try to straighten it out.

We are three years in folks. The O-line talent behind the guys right now is the same rated recruits, with the exception of Gjere. It's one thing if the line were just not getting it done, but that is not the case. These guys have talent, but look confused, lost and don't play as a unit. I could live with getting beat with playing to the best of your ability, but that isn't happening. If they struggled at the beginning of the year and got better each week, at least there would be hope, but we've gotten worse from the beginning of the year, not better.

The o-line has regressed beyond belief at this point. We have enough talent on the line to be light years better than we are, realizing that light years better would get us to average. There is only one reason we are this bad -- COACHING.

As I said, my guess is Brewster only gets one more year to fix all of the problems on this team, not just the o-line -- losing 9 starters on Defense certainly isn't going to help.

One hopeful sign today was for only the second time this year, we didn't commit an unsportsmanlike penalty.

So by holding your Chosen One accountable, I know that means "I don't get it" but at the end of the day, there is only one coach to blame for this, and that is the man "in charge".

The OP is right on. I don't want to start all over again. However, if we are treading water next year and this ridiculous offense cotinues then its over.

Good post except I don't think Wills was highly recruited.

The O-line, the change to the pro style format, the loss of his best friend/best receiver and the learning curve of a rookie OC have left Weber a mess. A total complete mess. The kid is trying too hard and making really bad choices.

If Weber does not fumble the snap, it is at worse 3-3. If he does not throw the stupid intentional grounding penalty, its at worse 6-3 Gophers. Tell me that does not make it a different game rather than down 9-0 at half.

I agree with Brewster - 1 man goes down, the next man steps up. Seen some very good depth in a number of areas. But Weber needed a "mental health" break last week and Brewster/Fisch obviously felt Grey was not ready. I fault them for that. The 2nd QB has to be ready to play.

Brewster coaching in 2011 hinges on him being back in 2010. I just have this odd feeling given that the resentment from the fan base is growing louder and louder, and given that his buyout is pretty minimal, that he won't be back next year. The U just has too much on the line with the new stadium to continue putting out the product that we saw against SDSU and today at Iowa.

Brewster will be back for one more year. Even if his buyout is small, the fact that the team took a bus to Iowa City to save money means there isn't much money available. Not to mention that Maturi would more or less be sealing his own fate... He'll get one more year I think, but has rightfully earned his place on the hot seat.
