I am not tuned in as some but the Daily Gopher needs to draw a bit more obvious a conclusion. I assume this is a veiled shot at the Gophers' marketing department being too conservative?

Well then, what about the fact that a real journalist, someone who is paid to research and write about newsworthy things by a real, actual, newspaper, spent time on **this story, posted it on a the actual website of a real newspaper?

I guess even the newspapermen in Iowa take on the Hawkeyes inferiority complex. And originality...

I understood the "joke", just didn't think it was really delivered well, or funny for that matter.
