Brady Skjei of the top-ranked Minnesota men’s hockey program has been named the Big Ten Third Star of the Week after helping the Gophers clinch the inaugural Big Ten regular-season championship last weekend at Michigan.

An All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection, Skjei tallied three goals over the weekend to double his season total. The Lakeville, Minn., native scored Minnesota’s first goal in Friday’s 3-2 overtime victory over the Wolverines – a game that clinched the regular-season crown for the Gophers in the program’s first year of Big Ten play. Skjei added another two goals on Saturday for his first career multi-goal game and his second career multi-point game.

Minnesota has now earned a total of 22 weekly Big Ten honors from 11 different players this season.

Selected 28th overall in the first round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Rangers, Skjei has 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) in 71 career games for the Maroon & Gold.

The top-ranked Gophers head into the inaugural Big Ten tournament at Xcel Energy Center as the top seed and will face the winner of four-seed Ohio State and five-seed Michigan State on Friday at 7 p.m. The conference title will be decided on Saturday at 7 p.m. All five games of the Big Ten tournament will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network and BTN2Go.com.
