The Big Ten is at a disadvantage by not having fertile recruiting grounds, but Hoke still thinks conference schools are doing well with what they have and what they're looking for.

"I really believe in this conference, and everyone has to recruit the way they need to recruit for their school," he said. "It's all different. There are some that may have some things that they're very proud of and may be a little better in some people's eyes. But you look at the recruiting that Minnesota, Jerry Kill and his staff have done. It's an amazing conference of coaches that work awfully hard."

Go Gophers!!

:confused:Can you believe this guy! With all the expertise on this site and this guy comes along and has the nerve to suggest that Kill is a very good recruiter. At a very early point in Kill's tenure here I suggested that this guy really knows what he is doing. That suggestion was met with a great deal of resistance and skepticism. How could we possibly know that? It is not rocket science folks.

Didn't Fitzgerald and Dantonio also say that Brewster was a good coach? Many coaches are quick to compliment their counterparts and other programs, unless you're talking about Spurrier and Bielema.

All the football mags have the Gophers last in the conference in recruiting, although I don't buy it. Still, we have a ways to go.

What else is Hoke going to say? The strength of the Big Ten is a benefit for all team especially as we head towards a 4 team and later an 8 team tourney.

He went out of his way to mention Kill.

Umm... but you know, there are quite a bit of other coaches from the B1G that he didn't mention... so I think Hoke is genuine in his statement.

It's one thing to say that if the question was directly about MN and Kill. It's another to go out of your way to mention someone after asked a general question.

Not that it's a big deal either way.

Be careful about counting any eggs in year 3. I think Kill has shown he and his staff are good coaches. We have yet to see if their recruiting acumen will result in any .500 years in the Big Ten. We all hope so, but still waiting to see...

I am always amazed by those people here who are unable to look at what Kill has done elsewhere and what he has done here and then say "We all hope so, but still waiting to see..." I hope you are not an investor in the stock market because I expect you wouldn't decide to buy a stock until the buying opportunity is long gone past. Of course after the fact you will know exactly how well coach Kill and his staff does. But there is plenty of information to draw a reasonable conclusion now and you the good new is that you won't even lose any money if you are wrong. But I am sure you will be the first person on the bandwagon after the fact. I apologize taking my frustrations out on you but I once used to work with a person who never has enough information to make a decision. He always needed more. As a result, he brought everything to a stand still. I often felt like doing this when this happened.:banghead:

Coaches usually love the recruiting of other coaches who don't compete with them for recruits. Hoke(or anyone else) would love to have a conference full of guys who do a good job getting recruits that his school had no interest in.

There is no doubt that the 2014 class is off to a strong start. Hopefully, in a year or two, we will read about another head coach complaining about Kill's recruiting...that's a lot more likely to be a sign that he's making his mark in the recruiting wars.

This is Hoke responding to those type of mags, along with the SEC hype, and overrated recruiting services. He's trying to support his conference coaches with the very real fact that not every program is going to be able to pull down 5 star players, and yet seemingly the B1G has programs that find a way to develop and target kids who fit their programs.
The goal of recruiting is not to impress internet bloggers and recruiting experts, it's to ultimately win more football games, which regardless of the critics, B1G football has done a pretty good job of over the years.

i dont think you will ever see any top ten classes out of coach kill, but he will get players that fit his system and he will make them better. thats how you build

Last time I checked Kill and this coaching staff have not had .500 B1G conference record as of yet. Nothing wrong with taking a wait and see approach and not drawing a conclusion that a .500 conference record is a given which I think Sparlimb was alluding to.

He went out of his way to mention Kill.

Actually, he mentioned damn near everybody -- at least everybody in the Legends Division -- and actually left Kill/Minnesota out until remembering Kill later:

"We all have that pride in the conference we represent," he said. "You look at Bo Pelini and Nebraska over the last three years, Wisconsin, what they've done over the course of some time, Penn State is a team I have the utmost respect for Bill O'Brien as a man and as a football coach. All the teams are working hard. Northwestern and Iowa in our division are always a problem for us. Obviously Mark Dantonio and what they've done at Michigan State."

Da Hokester, ever the diplomat...
I'm all in with Coach Kill, I think he's done a real nice job so far, but I've often wondered how we might have fared with Da Hokester as our coach.
I'm sure he had his reasons for turning Maturi down...
Food for thought, that is all.

DII, the FCS and the MAC are not the same as the big ten, look at Wacker didn't Texas State name their field after him? He sucked at Minnesota. I hope Kill turns it around here and like sparlimb I've been impressed with the improvements of the team, but the bottom line is you need to recruit men not boys to win in the big ten and we won't truly know for a couple years if Kill can recruit the men that are needed. Iam sure someone will counter with a list of some of Kill's best recruits, but we need more depth in our recruiting classes. I buy that Kill can coach them up once they're here, but can we get enough men here?

We all have different comfort zones. My points though are (One) that some people here are only willing to say coach Kill is the right coach after the fact. That's your right but I have never been impressed with Monday morning quarterbacks. (Two) That by looking at coach Kill's past record of turning programs around and noticing and appreciating what he has already accomplished here, there is more than enough information and facts to make a reasonable assessment of the likelihood of coach Kill being successful here.

Do we have certainty? Hell no! But the truth is that there are way too many people here that are just plain afraid of being disappointed again. That is understandable but we need to be a little less cautious in recognizing some positive things that are happening here. This is going to take and there is no guarantees but at least we should enjoy the journey a little bit more without being afraid of being so afraid of being disappointed.

I like and respect Kill as well, but I think Hoke was on the top of Maturi's list (hence the "not well kept secret" meeting) and a lot of other ADs' lists. I don't follow college football as closely as I used to, but Hoke's name was constantly mentioned in the discussion of "Which second-tier guy is most likely to move up to a major program?"

I actually think Hoke would have made sure the story of him meeting with Maturi and Mora leaked in the event its handling wouldn't have been botched so badly on our end. I think Hoke wanted Michigan to know that he was being courted.
