Travis Boyd and Kyle Rau of the top-ranked Minnesota men’s hockey program have earned Big Ten honors as the conference’s First and Second Stars of the Week, respectively, according to a release today by the league.
Boyd picked up his first-career Big Ten honor after leading all Big Ten skaters with four points (two goals, two assists) last week as Minnesota competed in the Mariucci Classic to start the second half. The junior notched a goal in the Gophers’ 2-2 overtime tie with Colgate on Friday before tallying a career-high three points (one goal, two assists) in the team’s 6-2 win over RPI on Saturday. Boyd, who was named to the Mariucci Classic All-Tournament Team, scored goals in back-to-back games for the first time in his college career over the weekend.
Rau, meanwhile, tallied three points (two goals, one assist) over the weekend including his 100th collegiate point with an assist in Friday’s game against Colgate. Rau, who now has 102 points (38 goals, 64 assists) in 98 career games, is just the 80th Gopher to reach 100 points and the first since current Minnesota Wild forward Erik Haula did so in 2012-13. Rau added his first multi-goal game of the season on Saturday as the Gophers moved to 6-0-0 all-time when Rau scores more than one goal and 54-8-4 all-time when he tallies a point. The week’s honor marks Rau’s second accolade from the Big Ten (Third Star of the Week on Oct. 15, 2013).
Minnesota has now earned Big Ten honors in each of the team’s nine weeks of competition this season – Minnesota’s first in the new Big Ten Conference. This week’s honors for Boyd and Rau bring the Gophers’ season total to 12 weekly honors from eight different players.
The Gophers return to action this weekend with a rare Sunday-Monday series at Penn State for the program’s first-ever series against the Nittany Lions. Sunday’s series opener is set for 6 p.m. CT with the game available via live stream on Gophersports.com while Monday’s finale is also set for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network and BTN2Go.com. Radio broadcasts for both games will be featured on 1500 ESPN.
