FWIW, I have you guys in San Antonio (a NICE, nice location), assuming you beat Illinois and Iowa plays for the MNC. If Iowa goes to the Rose, you fall to Champs (I don't like Orlando, personally).

A couple of things:

1) Iowa doesn't have to go to the MNC game for two Big Ten teams to get to BCS games. Iowa could go Rose Bowl, while an 11-1 Penn State could go Sugar, Fiesta, or Orange. That would help Minnesota.

2) The Champs Bowl chooses ahead of the Alamo Bowl this year.

I was unaware of this - any idea why it was switched?

Part of the four-year deal each bowl signed prior to 2006.

Champs chose first in 2006, while the Alamo chose first in 2007 and 2008. Champs chooses first again in 2009.

With Michigan losing yesterday, I think the Alamo becomes a possibility, even if Iowa goes to the Rose Bowl. Penn State will be a BCS at-large if they win out, which puts tOSU in the Cap One and Wisky in the Outback. Then it's a scramble the rest of the way, and the way Michigan is fading, we could go to San Antonio, no matter how badly they don't want to take us.

I think if everyone has a place for a bowl eligible Big Ten team, then even a 6-6 Michigan is going to get chosen ahead of us - almost certainly by the Champs Bowl. I think Michigan State is the team we need to watch. Would the Alamo take a 6-6 MSU team over a 7-5 Gophers team even knowing that we beat MSU? Maybe, maybe not.

I'd love to stick it to the Alamo Bowl after the historical snubs they've given to the University of Minnesota. Hope we get an invite and decline it.

So, we could go to Detroit? No, I think San Antonio would be fine.

(and, yes, I know the Insight is next in line, but they will likely steer clear of us because we've been there 2 of last 3 years and there would be a MSU or Northwestern there to take)

A 6-6 team can't be selected over a team with a winning record.

A 6-6 team can't be selected over a team with a winning record.

This is what I've always been led to believe. I know that's true when it comes to at-large bids - all seven-win teams must be selected before a six-win team is. But I've never been able to find an official set of guidelines when it comes to the conference bowl selection process.

For example, supposedly there's the rule where a team must be within one win for a bowl to take a team lower in the standings (i.e. taking a 7-5 team over an 8-4 team), but then I've heard that the rule doesn't apply to the Alamo or Champs Bowls. I've also heard that the rule gets waived if the league gets two teams into the BCS, thus making the selection process a free-for-all.

The whole thing is really quite confusing, but the one constant is that the Alamo Bowl will do everything in their power to avoid taking us.

A 6-6 team can't be selected over a team with a winning record.

No, they absolutely can jump. As long as all Big Ten bowl eligible teams have a spot to go within the conference tie-ins, then a 6-6 team can jump a 7-6 team. In other words, if there are 7 bowl teams and 7 spots, then a 6-6 team can jump a 7-5 team. So, if it turns out that that's the case (and it likely will be) then a 6-6 Michigan or 6-6 MSU could be chosen before a 7-5 Minnesota (again assuming all bowl eligible Big Ten teams have a spot to go). The only time a 6-6 team cannot be selected over a 7-5 team is if that means a 7-5 team stays home.

At-large 6-6 teams cannot be chosen if there are available 7-5 teams, but that isn't the case with the conference tie-ins.

I would actually rather have the Alamo Bowl than the Champs Sports Bowl (I think). Keep in mind, I'm not traveling to either game, so this is purely a question of what is good for the program and not for my own travel desires. Although I think I'd rather go to San Antonio than Orlando if given the option anyway.

The payout is the same. The ratings and spot is basically the same (ESPN, primetime, between Christmas and New Years).

The biggest difference to me is I would much rather play the 4th/5th Big 12 team this year than the 4th ACC team. Basically it's the difference between Clemson/Virginia Tech or Texas Tech/Nebraska. I really want to see us win a bowl game this year, and the second option looks more feasable, as the Big 12 sucks this year.

If we go to the champs sports bowl we play a SEC team wright?? And who do you think we would play from the SEC??

Champs Bowl matches a Big Ten team vs. an ACC team.

As of this morning, College Football News is projecting:

Alamo Bowl: Minnesota vs. Nebraska

Could be a good matchup. Cosgrove, I'm sure, would like to show Huskers fans a great Gophers D and if Iowa State can spank them - we might have a good shot.

Two things: The Big 10 pools payouts, so it is only the "traveling money" that varies for a program between bowls; The Alamo Bowl is being played January 2nd this year - not sure why.

I would LOVE for Minnesota to play Nebraska. We'd have a legit shot to win. Plus, we'd get credit for beating a "namebrand" even though Nebby isn't exactly "namebrand" anymore. Those type of wins, however, can be important to a program, just in terms of culture.

Nah, the Gophers could win out and them bleepers down in San Antonio would find some loophole to ensure that any team lower than us, besides Indiana or Northwestern, would go there instead of us.

After 3 strikes already you'd think that Gopher fans would hate San Antonio by now. Alas, I see many on the board still hoping to go there. If the game was in Austin, then I'd be excited. The rest of Texas is a bleephole.

Disagree...San Antonio is a fun city for a bowl game. My college bball team was playing its holiday games in Texas and we stayed in San Antonio during the Alamo Bowl. Iowa was playing Texas Tech and the Riverwalk was hopping. Iowa fans would do cheers across the river to other Iowa fans on the otherside, etc, etc. It was a good atmosphere.

The bowl reps are a**holes for snubbing us year after year but that doesn't change my feeling about the destination.

PIZZA BOWL?

Did you guys know this? Motor City Bowl is now call the PIZZA Bowl?

It was bad enough when it was called the Motor City bowl in freezing cold Detroit, but now...the Pizza bowl? It's slated for #7 Big Ten team vs MAC team...man who would accept that bowl invitation?

The Pizza bowl?!!! WTF

I believe we can be #4 in the Big Ten (depends on how we play Ill & Iowa and how Wisc finishes).

We WILL be #5 if we beat Illinois.

Illinois looks like...

...less of a gimme after their performance yesterday.
Let's hope their performance was a one game thing.
And our winning streak keeps building.

I'm already nervous. Let's not get into too many scenarios until we win next week. Just like I didn't think the Spartans would be ready to play after losing to Iowa, Illinois hopefully feels like they won their big game but there isn't anything else to do.

I think Illinois needs to win out to be bowl eligible. And we're the next thing standing in their way.

Illinois needs to win their next 4, including a game against Cincinnatti, to become eligible. Not going to happen.

Obviously Illinois figured something out last week, but this is the same team that lost by double digits to Indiana and Purdue.

Does that give Illinois one of the toughest NC schedules around? Missouri and Cincy?
