First out is the Hawaii Bowl. Hawaii couldn’t field a team. Memphis is already in Hawaii

a bit interesting. There were originally 42 bowls and 83 bowl eligible Teams. So, a 43rd bowl was added and Hawaii got invited thanks to a special clause that Hawaii can go to the Hawaii bowl if they are 6-7

One wonders why Memphis wasn't moved to the Gator Bowl since they qualified for a bowl and have been practicing. Maybe Hawaii's COVID outbreak just happened in the past 24 hours and it was too late...

Rutgers had already accepted the gator bowl invite when Hawaii determined they could not play
 

Youngest attends college in Honolulu so I end up paying more attention to our Island State than otherwise would occur.

Yes, Hawai'i is in its own covid cycle that does not really match the patterns on the mainland. Delta still dominates but omicron is there and spreading.

The main newspaper is the Star Advertiser. It notes "At least 30 members of the Hawaii football program are in quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19."

Certainly that rivals what Coach Fleck had to deal with at the start of the 2020 season here, especially if the entire kicking unit is out of play. Hope to never see anything like that again.
 

I saw where the date of the Gator Bowl can be moved to give Rutgers practice time. Can’t imagine the mess this all is for people who made travel plans.

Stranded in Hawaii…. could be worse.
 

Knock on wood, but is anyone else wondering if Minnesota will have or has COVID issues for the game that we aren't aware of/not being told? Seems like it's too quiet on that front and feels like suddenly we could be without a bunch of guys and get our butts kicked.

right now it's far more likely the game would get canceled rather than they go ahead and play if a bunch of guys are out for one team.
 

In Hawaii it would be almost tempting to have a ... not real positive test "oh man I can't fly home ..."
 


Omnicrom is going to ends sports (again) in a few weeks. Unless testing and quarantine protocols change drastically.
 




What is the MN testing protocol. Is MN routinely testing asymptomatic, vaccinated players and staff? If so, what is the rationale?

I saw the CFP national championship could be decided by forfeit as they are enacting a very strict rescheduling criterion, within 4 days of the original date IIRC, which seems nonsensical and a cheat of the players, staff, and fans. What is the rush should a team have an outbreak?

And of course testing and quarantine protocols should be changed drastically. Crazy to quarantine and cancel games when healthy athletes are not sick.

Early data from a UK study (this is real science by the way) indicates that omicron is 70% less likely than delta to put someone in the hospital.

CDC just lowered the quarantine period for health care workers to 7 days. If those who work with potentially high risk people only need to quarantine for 7 days...I'm guessing rules will be changing for all sooner than later.

50 to 70% on very small and early numbers. Hope that is the case. Spreads at least twice as fast as delta, though.

In a statement, Boston College said it did not have enough players to field a team because of coronavirus issues, season-ending injuries, opt-outs and transfers. Gophers have been pretty lucky in that regard. Curious how many opt-outs and transfers BC had.

Yes, there is good reason for cautious optimism, about as contagious as measles which we still have been able almost to wipe out with mass vaccinations. Unfortunately in the short-term not so much, these bowl games are dropping off like flies.
 



Miami is out of the Sun Bowl. You have two orphan bowl teams in, SMU and East Carolina, I wonder if they will get an invite.
 


I was irritated when the Gater bowl was canceled and Rutgers got to slide in there while the B1G West second place finisher gets a lame bowl game played in a baseball park after hours on a work night against a .500 opponent. With what is actually happening with Omicron, I should have set my sights far higher than the Gater Bowl. Rose Bowl anyone?

It would be nice if things could level off and omicron or variants with similar hospitalization levels establish itself as a long term dominant strain.
