The starting junior left tackle for Boise State is a kid named Mat Slater out of St Paul. Is this someone the Gophs recruited? He's doing pretty well for BSU (of course that's against WAC teams)

This is from dpdoll's post in the 3 players from MN...

playing for Iowa thread.

Matt Slater (Cretin-Derham Hall '06) - Boise St. (walk-on) starting LT.

I don't remember but I can't remember hearing this kids name before.
Does anybody remember a very good Wide Reciever from Minneapolis playing for Wyoming?
This would have around '86 or so.

I remember watching Slater in the Prep Bowl (or semis; can't remember) and being very impressed. At the time, he was a tall kid, but lean, and could really move. I remember being surprised to hear that he didn't have any offers at the time, so I thought one of the area D2 schools was going to get a heck of a player. Good for him!

re3886 - Marcus Harris is the guy you are thinking of, I believe, and that was from 93-96. He actually was a quarterback in high school at Brooklyn Center, I think. He had a GREAT career at Wyoming and is in their hall of fame.

Turns out you got it exactly right.

The Gophers did not recruit Slater. He had an offer from Indiana that was pulled off the table at the last minute so he ended up walking on at Boise State and earning a scholarship.

Matt's dad is Bob Slater, who had a highly successful run as head coach at STA until being fired in a controversial move a few years back (this caused Matt to transfer to CDH).

it would be really cool to know who all the active D1 kids from minnesota are and where they are at. I'm mostly interested to know if there are kids like the boise kid who flew under the radar.

100% correct info, Indiana will not be getting any CDH kids anytime soon. Matt and his father visited the school, they offered, he went home to talk it over with his mom. They called the next to except and he was told it was no longer on the table. Matt is a geat kid from a great family he did not deserve to be treated that way. Imagine going through the excitement of being offered, telling friends and family and then boof no offer.

Great to see in the end it has worked out for him and his family.

Slator no longer 'lean'

He now lists at 6'4" and 290#, we'll see how he fares against a large Oregon front tomorrow night on ESPN.
