Has he been cleared medically to play?
I am hoping he is red-shirting. Because he transferred from Ohio State, I think he has 5 years to play 3 B10 seasons. So, he should still have two years of eligibility after this season.
Because of Big Ten rules about transferring between conference members, Bobek will lose a season of eligibility in 2012 as he sits out because of NCAA transfer rules. He will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2013. Bobek will pay his own way this fall because Minnesota is at its scholarship maximum (85). He will be on scholarship with the Gophers beginning in January 2013.

Well one center went down with a potentially career ending injury (see Mottla), so I'm not trying to jettison an upperclassman on the OL.
At this point do we really want Bobek to redshirt? He's 3rd on the depth chart at center as a junior. Probably best to move it along a free up the scholarship.
I can't, in anything you said, find one point where you contradict what I said. The different is merely semantics.Gopherprof, no offense, but your post highlights the pitfalls of fan forums. You're posting information that is completely erroneous. Brian Bobek was ineligible last season due to NCAA transfer rules and practiced as a Scout team player. He began spring practice as the #2 center as would be expected since he was competing with a returning starter, the same depth chart position that MLB Damien Wilson played during the spring while attempting to earn the starting position himself. After the first week of spring practice, Bobek contracted a serious heart condition (viral myocarditis) and was forced to sit out from that point forward through the 2013 regular season. He is not #3 on the depth chart as he has not been listed on the depth chart since contracting his illness. Using your logic, if Damien Wilson had been in Brian Bobek's situation, you would suggest letting Wilson go asap to open another scholarship. Bobek had 3 years to play 2 after transferring from Ohio State per Big Ten rules and has 2 remaining years of eligibility without applying for a medical redshirt. I would respectfully suggest that you withhold your judgment until he's actually played and competed for a position. You might be very pleased that he is a Gopher.

But using that logic, you could apply that to literally anyone. It's a nice and milktoast thing to say about a player, and that's fine, but odds are long for a kid with a documented health problem that has no serious college playing time since graduating high school in 2011. I'm not saying we cut the kid, but applying a medical red**** so that he can eat up more years on scholarship (he's taken two and hasn't played a snap yet) might not be in the program's best interests. Medical redshirts are usually used on players that either already have made an impact or that you seen in the program's longterm interests. Neither of those things apply to Bobek.
As for depth at offensive line, we will be in tremendous shape for the next two years, so that's hardly a concern.

What a snooty ****** bag of a comment by Gopherprof. I have to ask, what were you hoping to achieve by making such a comment? Were you hoping to offend a players family member so they had to chime in and defend why Kill used and will still continue to use a sholarship on their son? Bobek would have been our starting center this year had his illness not taken him out. Since Jon will likely miss next year as well I would think there is an even greater importance Bobek is on the team. He will be our starting center next year, you can book it. Please refrain from making a$$hole comments regarding team members status on the team. Kill will do what's right, he has more riding on it than you, Mr. I'm an anonymous message board GM guy.
Nah, Bobek is too light.
I was making a reasonable point about scholarship allocation. This is something that every single coaching staff at every school does. It's not about being friends with people or having fuzzy feelings. What a snooty ****** bag of a comment by Gopherprof. I have to ask, what were you hoping to achieve by making such a comment?
Learn to read. I didn't say we should cut his scholarship. I said using a medical redshirt and keeping him around for an additional year probably doesn't make much sense. He'll still have plenty of time to get his college degree. As for the parent comment....the hell? This is a Big Ten football message board. There are a million worse things out there. Were you hoping to offend a players family member so they had to chime in and defend why Kill used and will still continue to use a sholarship on their son?
No he wouldn't have, and you have literally no evidence of that at all.Bobek would have been our starting center this year had his illness not taken him out.
Yeah ok.Since Jon will likely miss next year as well I would think there is an even greater importance Bobek is on the team. He will be our starting center next year, you can book it.
If you think Kill hasn't already nudged players out the door for medical or performance reasons your head is dug deeply in the sand. Grow up.Please refrain from making a$$hole comments regarding team members status on the team. Kill will do what's right, he has more riding on it than you, Mr. I'm an anonymous message board GM guy.

Kill was one of the coaches that came out against 4-year guaranteed scholarships, and that's far more harsh than simply not giving a medical redshirt.

I'm not sure some of you understand what a medical redshirt is, or how it's used, but they frequently aren't employed because keeping a kid around for another year isn't always the best thing for the program. This is really standard stuff. Kill was one of the coaches that came out against 4-year guaranteed scholarships, and that's far more harsh than simply not giving a medical redshirt.
First I have to say that Killme is the most pollyanna p*ssy in the history of message boards. Second, this is kind of a dumb thread because the kid obviously has talent and if his health allows he should be around next year to compete for likely the back up position at center and lord knows with the health issues we've had at center we need him if he's able to go. If he's not able to compete because of his medical issues then the Gophers can petition to have him ruled medical unable to play and his scholarship wouldn't count against our limit; but he gets to keep it. Let's hope he recovers fully and then if he's able to win a spot great if he's not then he is a depth player for us.
Bobek tweeted this today. It'd be nice if he could at least provide some depth next year at center, especially with the injury to Christenson.

What did he tweet? I can't see it.
