Bobek

Good question. You could shoot Joe C at the Strib or Marcus at the PionerPress a Tweet or email and they would probably know.

I am hoping he is red-shirting. Because he transferred from Ohio State, I think he has 5 years to play 3 B10 seasons. So, he should still have two years of eligibility after this season.

He only has two years of eligibility. It was discussed a lot last year. Here is a link: http://espn.go.com/blog/bigten/post/_/id/51692/

Because of Big Ten rules about transferring between conference members, Bobek will lose a season of eligibility in 2012 as he sits out because of NCAA transfer rules. He will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2013. Bobek will pay his own way this fall because Minnesota is at its scholarship maximum (85). He will be on scholarship with the Gophers beginning in January 2013.

At this point do we really want Bobek to redshirt? He's 3rd on the depth chart at center as a junior. Probably best to move it along a free up the scholarship.

Well one center went down with a potentially career ending injury (see Mottla), so I'm not trying to jettison an upperclassman on the OL.

The exact reason for my question. With Joe C out, it would be nice to have some other options to back up Tommy.

Gopherprof, no offense, but your post highlights the pitfalls of fan forums. You're posting information that is completely erroneous. Brian Bobek was ineligible last season due to NCAA transfer rules and practiced as a Scout team player. He began spring practice as the #2 center as would be expected since he was competing with a returning starter, the same depth chart position that MLB Damien Wilson played during the spring while attempting to earn the starting position himself. After the first week of spring practice, Bobek contracted a serious heart condition (viral myocarditis) and was forced to sit out from that point forward through the 2013 regular season. He is not #3 on the depth chart as he has not been listed on the depth chart since contracting his illness. Using your logic, if Damien Wilson had been in Brian Bobek's situation, you would suggest letting Wilson go asap to open another scholarship. Bobek had 3 years to play 2 after transferring from Ohio State per Big Ten rules and has 2 remaining years of eligibility without applying for a medical redshirt. I would respectfully suggest that you withhold your judgment until he's actually played and competed for a position. You might be very pleased that he is a Gopher.

I can't, in anything you said, find one point where you contradict what I said. The different is merely semantics.

But using that logic, you could apply that to literally anyone. It's a nice and milktoast thing to say about a player, and that's fine, but odds are long for a kid with a documented health problem that has no serious college playing time since graduating high school in 2011. I'm not saying we cut the kid, but applying a medical red**** so that he can eat up more years on scholarship (he's taken two and hasn't played a snap yet) might not be in the program's best interests. Medical redshirts are usually used on players that either already have made an impact or that you seen in the program's longterm interests. Neither of those things apply to Bobek.

As for depth at offensive line, we will be in tremendous shape for the next two years, so that's hardly a concern.

Actually, KillerGopherFan makes a good point. This isn't fantasy football. You're too quick to jettison a player based on inaccurate and incorrect information and assumption. He refuted (contradicted) your statement about Bobek being 3rd on the depth chart, which you used to determine his ability to help this program. This coaching staff brought him here because they believed he could help. Kill has recently stated something along the lines of "you can never have too much depth" on the offensive line. Tommy Olson has only one more year and I haven't heard much about Christenson's injury and prognosis for recovery.

Now, you're not completely wrong about holding off on requesting a medical redshirt, since he may never be cleared to play. But, thank goodness you're not making personnel decisions for this program.

good post, i hope you're right as i'd love to see bobek get healthy and take the field!

I was looking at him to be one of the key points of success for us this year. I can honestly say that I was as excited about his potential as any player on our roster. Now I just hope for him that he gets his health back. I hope to see him next year but putting things in perspective it ain't that important

What a snooty ****** bag of a comment by Gopherprof. I have to ask, what were you hoping to achieve by making such a comment? Were you hoping to offend a players family member so they had to chime in and defend why Kill used and will still continue to use a sholarship on their son? Bobek would have been our starting center this year had his illness not taken him out. Since Jon will likely miss next year as well I would think there is an even greater importance Bobek is on the team. He will be our starting center next year, you can book it. Please refrain from making a$$hole comments regarding team members status on the team. Kill will do what's right, he has more riding on it than you, Mr. I'm an anonymous message board GM guy.

Nah, Bobek is too light.

I was making a reasonable point about scholarship allocation. This is something that every single coaching staff at every school does. It's not about being friends with people or having fuzzy feelings.

Learn to read. I didn't say we should cut his scholarship. I said using a medical redshirt and keeping him around for an additional year probably doesn't make much sense. He'll still have plenty of time to get his college degree. As for the parent comment....the hell? This is a Big Ten football message board. There are a million worse things out there.

Bobek would have been our starting center this year had his illness not taken him out.
No he wouldn't have, and you have literally no evidence of that at all.

Since Jon will likely miss next year as well I would think there is an even greater importance Bobek is on the team. He will be our starting center next year, you can book it.
Yeah ok.

If you think Kill hasn't already nudged players out the door for medical or performance reasons your head is dug deeply in the sand. Grow up.

I'm not sure some of you understand what a medical redshirt is, or how it's used, but they frequently aren't employed because keeping a kid around for another year isn't always the best thing for the program. This is really standard stuff. Kill was one of the coaches that came out against 4-year guaranteed scholarships, and that's far more harsh than simply not giving a medical redshirt.

You can bet Coach Kill will do what is best for the program, and for the players.

He will contribute if he earns a starting spot, and he'll be much older and stronger. Coach Kill is true to his word. Don't give up on him yet.

Look at Josh Campion. He went to Fork Union Prep Academy in Va, and redshirts he first year. That extra year of maturing and conditioning helped with securing playing time tremendously.

It's not about being friends with people or having fuzzy feelings.

You haven't been following this team, evidently. I think a major component in building this program is about caring for one another, loyalty, long-lasting relationships, and followers of the Gophers have likely had more 'fuzzy feelings' this year than they've had in a long time.

Learn to read...This is a Big Ten football message board. There are a million worse things out there.

Actually, you might want to brush up on your reading skills. This is a Gopher message board. And, it doesn't matter if there are a million worse things when you say something offensive. It remains offensive.

No he wouldn't have, and you have literally no evidence of that at all.

Point suicide. STCGopher gave an opinion which has just as much validity as yours. But, given some of the things you've posted, I'm leaning towards his credibility over yours.

If you think Kill hasn't already nudged players out the door for medical or performance reasons your head is dug deeply in the sand. Grow up.

Um, do you have evidence...since that seems to be important to you? No? Didn't think so. This was a blatant inflammatory and derogatory claim.

Kill was one of the coaches that came out against 4-year guaranteed scholarships, and that's far more harsh than simply not giving a medical redshirt.

Why? Pretty complicated topic and I'm not sure you're qualified to weigh in on what is harsh.

I believe your post above is illegal since dpodoll own the patent on this method of responding to others. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery but there is only one dpodoll.

First I have to say that Killme is the most pollyanna p*ssy in the history of message boards. Second, this is kind of a dumb thread because the kid obviously has talent and if his health allows he should be around next year to compete for likely the back up position at center and lord knows with the health issues we've had at center we need him if he's able to go. If he's not able to compete because of his medical issues then the Gophers can petition to have him ruled medical unable to play and his scholarship wouldn't count against our limit; but he gets to keep it. Let's hope he recovers fully and then if he's able to win a spot great if he's not then he is a depth player for us.

Thanks for that part, but gosh, I can't take all the credit. I'd like to thank my parents, my coaches, my teachers, my pastor... Not sure why I got the asterisk word, but maybe it's in my 5th-grade playbook.

Question of getting extra year

It was the Big Ten and not the NCAA that took a year of eligibility from Bobek. Therefore, isn't the Big Ten they may need to go to appeal for nother year?

Bobek tweeted this today. It'd be nice if he could at least provide some depth next year at center, especially with the injury to Christenson.

From Marcus

Kill said junior center Brian Bobek, a transfer from Ohio State, practiced Saturday for the first time this season. Bobek, who was suffering from a viral infection, the coach said, will be ready to play next season.

Interesting. Could he get a medical reshirt for last season and have 2 left to play?

Great news. Need some depth with the unknown aspect of Jon C's recovery from his injury.
