Bobby Bell, who had a 12-year hall of fame career as a defensive end-linebacker with the Kansas City Chiefs, was a quarterback as a Gophers freshman.

Of Chiefs’ QB Patrick Mahomes’ $503 million, 10-year contract signed last week, Bell, reached at his home in Kansas City, said, “I just wish I was playing quarterback now. I’m just about 30,40, 50 years early.”

Bell’s first contract with the Chiefs was for a guaranteed $150,000 for five years (1963-1967).

Bell, who turned 80 last month, said about Mahomes’ contract, “It’s great. Somebody’s got to take the money. I would take it, too. While I was playing for the Chiefs, I worked full-time at General Motors. I had to pay the bills, you know.”

Bell, due to COVID-19, said he hasn’t been in a restaurant since the Chiefs won the Super Bowl in February.

“You’ve got to be careful. You don’t know what’s out there,” he said.

Yup- different era. I remember when players from the Purple People Eaters teams had jobs in the community in the offseason. Wally Hilgenberg sold cars, a couple were insurance guys etc.

It is a shame that these old NFLers don’t share in the wealth of the league that they helped build. It is my understanding that pre-1993 retirees have paltry financial assistance from the NFL and old NFLPA agreements. If they’d only known the kind of money that would eventually be generated in future generations of the NFL.

Bobby Bell is a gracious man. Doesn’t have a jealous bone in his body.

One of my many dark moments as a Minnesota sports fans was when Bobby Bell signed with the Chiefs instead of the Vikings after college. Add him with the likes of Page, Eller, Marshall, Krause? Would have been even more fun.

Bobby wanted to know the experience of winning a Super Bowl.

Ouch!

Was in Marine boot camp and the damn drill sergeants had hinted I could watch the game. I was dumb to believe them; which I realized when they gave me guard duty instead. On a Sunday, in the middle of San Diego, I was guarding the base with a nightstick. When it became apparent the Vikings were going to lose, they made me stand at attention outside their hut where I could hear the announcers but not see anything. Sadistic SOB's.
