Former Gopher All-American Bob Stein wrote this letter to the STrib:

In the midst of recent NFL turmoil, a national football poll with important Minnesota implications received too little attention. ESPN.com asked FBS college football head coaches which other college coach they would most want their son to play for. The University of Minnesota’s Jerry Kill tied for 3rd among all 128 Football Bowl Subdivision coaches.

He tied for first in voting by coaches from conferences at the level in which he coached before arriving at Minnesota, and those are the coaches who know him best. He led all Big Ten head football coaches overall. What a credit to Coach Kill and the U!

There can be no higher compliment from coaching peers than their personally saying, “I most trust you, among all other college football coaches, to bring out the best in my son, win the right way, and as his surrogate parent, help teach him ethics and life lessons.” That is the statement I believe voting coaches made.

No matter what this season’s eventual record, Gopher football is on the right trajectory. We are fortunate to have Coach Kill and all he represents.

BOB STEIN, Minnetonka

Go Gophers!!

What a hypocrite. Minnesota has Jerry Kill in spite of Bob Stein and his "Save Gopher Football" campaign.

Hypocrite might be a bit harsh. Many (including me) had hoped for a more high profile hire and was concerned when Kill & Co came in here. I am glad to say that any doubts I had are in the rear view mirror. Does that make us all hypocrits because we didn't know who Kill was when he was hired and because our obvious concerns based on many incompetant decisions by Maturi may have left us unsure? I say no...it makes us fans.

I applaud Bob Stein for standing up and praising a man who earned it even though initially, he may not have been his first choice.

Yeah, how dare someone ever change their opinion. Let's put him in front of the firing squad I say!

This line of thinking is pervasive in politics too and I've never understood it. Why is it such a sin to have a change of heart on something? My opinions on many things have changed drastically over the past several years as a result of receiving new information which showed that my previous conclusions were wrong. Maybe what you were hoping for was him to come out and say that his opinion was changed? That takes an uncommon amount of humility. Can't we just be happy that a former critic is now writing letters in support of the program?

I'm not talking about his feelings towards Jerry Kill at the time of the hire. I'm talking about the group's active efforts to disrupt the hiring process. Obviously people here have other opinions on the guy, but I have no interest in hearing his opinion on the coach or the team.

Bob Stein is a Gopher and he should be commended for that and all the heart and soul he gave in his playing days.

Aside from that...he's a total nutgoblin.

Haha, I probably couldn't have said it better myself.

Bob Stein - one of the rare breed of accomplished Jewish-athletes. Hank Greenberg, Sandy Koufax, Rod Carew...Kelly Leeks. Were there really ever any others?

There were many U Alumni that didn't have confidence in Maturi. ( Brewster , Pam Borton, etc. ) I
don't fault Stein one bit. He probably lighted a fire under Maturi. You do realize Gary Patterson called.
back after first being not interested; and that wasn't due too Maturi.

Still feel that Patterson "called back" just to pressure TCU into upping his contract. Which they did.

As for Bob Stein, seems like a decent fellow and he was a good player for the Gophers. However, looking at his experience as President and CEO of the Timberwolves, he might be one of the handful of people in the country that made Maturi look like a genius.

If Bob Stein hadn't been the son-in-law of one of the owners of the Timberwolves, most GopherHolers would have stopped paying attention to him several decades ago. He has absolutely nothing of value to offer the U and Gopher fans.

Only a successful man who supports the Gophers.

+100

Bob Stein was silent in the 70's and 80's while the program swirled down the toilet. He was all about pro sports until they turned on him.

Airplane and Airplane 2. Don't make them like that anymore. You can also add the Naked Gun series.

Wouldn't dare. Not PC? :drink::drink::drink:

But as long as Otto Pilot is smiling, who cares.

I know Bob well, and he has given more to this Gopher program than you will ever know. Many people, me included, had a vote of "no confidence" in our past athletic director, and who can blame them. Maturi never should have been retained after his Brewster debacle. Bob is a Gopher through and through. He and the others in that group all love the U and that is why they were so concerned.

+1...I'm amazed how many posters on this site categorize someone without ever having met them. This site oozes with pure conjecture.

Ruppert, total conjecture on GH? That is total BS. And that is conjecture. :)

You're amazed at posters who categorize someone they've never met? Why perish the thought. You're not leaving yourself out of that list of posters are you? Because a list of posters who have never categorized someone they hadn't met would be a pretty short list wouldn't it?

For sure. Tinyarch would be on it though. :cool03::rockon::cool03::drink::party:

I'm referring to people in the limelight. But yes, we all do, especially on this site. The only personality I've ragged on is Joe Mauer.
