One thing I noticed tonight the Gophers really slowed the game down; on over half of their possessions that did not result in a TO they ran the shot clock down to under 10. Wether or not this was Tubby's game plan or Washington's D. I'm not really sure, but the slow pace really did benefit UM because even though the gophers were out played the entire second half the huskies could only chip away and not take over the momentum and ultimately the game. I know Bo's style of basketball angers most of us because it takes away from the beautiful game, but by making Washington defend the entire shot clock they seemed to wear down and it took away from their athletic advantage (Just an opinion but I believe UW was far more talented). However Minnesota made this style look much better by constantly moving the ball through their offense and having continuous motion on the perimeter and in the post instead of just holding onto it and chucking up a three. Where has this been all year though? Tubby's philosophy change really cut down on turn overs, took away from Washingtons emotion, and at no point did the young gophers panic even when UW fought its way back to send it to OT. I thought it was far and away Tubby's best coaching performance since he has been at the U. ............And to be fair the Refs really were a big reason the game even went to OT.

This was the way we needed to play to beat UW. Too athletic all around to run with them.

I disagree, the Gophers got better looks in the first half when they chose to push the ball. UW came back in this game because the Gophers got stagnant in the half court and could not score. I was fine with slowing it down a bit when Rodney had to go to the bench with 4 fouls, but thought playing slow was a mistake for most of the rest of the half.

A good example was Austin Hollins shooting that 3 up by 6 with 2:30(?) left in the game. The announcers said that Tubby was pissed at Hollins for shooting the ball there, but that was one of the best looks we'd had in a LONG time. I thought it was a great decision and he almost put the dagger in UW right there.

Contrast that example to when Austin got called for a charge shortly after the bad charge call on Wahsington. It appeared to me that Austin was unsure of whether he should attack or not on that play and his indecisiveness lead to that turnover.

Maybe playing like WI is a bad way to phrase it, but we definitely slowed it down compared to what UW normally plays. Do you wanna call it more balanced? Either way in the first half we didn't just run, yes we took advantage of fast breaks but we also took our time in the half court.

I think UW Made some adjustments in the second half too and came out with great energy. Glad we held on!

Agree completely. There is a difference in between quick and in a hurry. We played quick and attacked the hoop in the first half. Towards the end of the game our offense got stagnant and we ended up giving up the the lead.

We weren't pushing the tempo in the first half, the half court sets were punishing UW. They were playing great half court basketball and using the clock to find high percentage shots.

This is what I was trying to say.

No they didn't, they said something like "oh, Tubby is going to be mad at that shot." Maybe he was mad, but the comment made was an assumption.

I thought it was a good shot. He was wide open. It's not like there was only 1:30 left.

I was 50/50 on Austin's 3pt shot. It was a great look, but I also think we could have benefited from pulling it out and running the clock. I don't think Tubby was too worried about it.

I was fine with Austin's shot, he had hit a few already and I agree it was a good look. However, even in the first half the tempo was much slower than the gophers usual run and gun pace they consistently worked through the offense, being patient and getting good looks shooting over 50% in the first half.

Nah, UW came back because they came out with great intensity (incl. defensive intensity) in the second half, a lot due to their buzzer 3 at the end of the first half. The gophers stumbled a bit and never regained momentum the rest of the game.

1. Wash played better D in the second half.

2. Fewer quick/bad shots, by Gophs.

I couldn't agree more...Just once, I'd like to see Tubby free up the reigns in a tight game. We might lose, but I'd rather lose doing what we do best and that is scoring in transition.

I swear you don't even watch the games.

What are you talking about??? I saw the Gophers go into slowdown mode time and time again when leading by anywhere from 5 to 10 points. We saw it vs Illinois in the Big Ten opener and we saw it all the way through the season in games like the MSU game or the NW game in the Big Ten Tourney, not to mention the Michigan game. It doesn't work for the Gophers...I'd rather see us play the way we got the lead and lose than continue with the slowdown mode and hope for a miracle at the shot clock buzzer.

What am I missing?

So...you'd rather lose, than win? Gophs won last night you know.

yes, we won but only because UW couldn't take advantage of our 25 turnovers. What about those other games I mentioned? We lost to MSU two years in a row in the same situation...Do you really think it'll be any different next year if we do the same thing? I'd rather free the reigns and play more aggressively...playing passive clearly doesn't work for us.

Don't know if anyone else heard Rick Majerus on KFAN with Barreiro, but his St. Louis team beat Washington by something like 25 points earlier in the year. He said he thought the Gophers could win but the key was making Washington play half court offense and not letting them run. Clearly Tubby thought the same thing and that is what we did. The game was lost by Washington in the first half where we had dunk after dunk and they politely declined to defend anyone. So after listening to Majerus, I saw the game I expected to...

I agree. If a shooter has an open three take it. Play to win the game, not pray that the clock runs out before you lose it. I like the decision by Austin.

Washington just upped the defense in the second half. Like most games. As far as Michigan st. or any more talented team goes, they can crusie along then turn up the defense and play hard the last 5 minutes and beat the less skilled team. It happens a lot. You have to have players who can do something one on one when the shotclock is running down as the set plays seem to stop working during these times. Exactly why with Dre and Rodney's development we are winning more games. You need closers.

Kudoo's to the free throw machine DRE!!!!
