Marcus Smart (So, Oklahoma State)

Andrew Wiggins (Fr, Kansas)

No one has seen Andrew Wiggins play one play in Collegiate basketball and we are going to say he is one of the top 5 players in the game.... Not a fan.

They do that every year. Nothing new.

With that being said, Andrew Wiggins will probably be the best player in the country.

Creighton had to be ecstatic when McDermott decided to stick around. Best walk on in the nation?

Too bad he didn't go to Florida State. The Barn might have had some December energy for that one if he had chosen the Seminoles.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't take these preseason lists as actual awards, just a prediction of who they think will make the actual list at the end of the season. That's the way I think of it at least. I don't see any problem with predicting someone as talented as him making the list. Even if they chose someone with college experience, it would still just be a guess. Either way they don't know yet who the top 5 players will be.

Really can't see Payne on the list,he's decent but there has to be a better center in the country, Wiggins, I will be surprised if he is not the #1 draft choice in 2014.

I guessed 4 of them without hesitation when I saw the title of this thread. I completely missed on Payne. I know he really improved last year but to me he doesn't belong in the same conversation with the other 4 names on this list. He wouldn't even make my 2nd team. Even within the state of Michigan, I'd take McGarry over Payne.

when was the last time a freshman didn't recieve all american honors, it would be ludicrous to not put the #1 recruit in the nation on a preseason all american team, at least in this day and age

as for Adreian Payne making the list that is somewhat laughable, he averaged 10.5 PPG and 7.6 RPG and 1.3 RPG and he is preseason 1st team all american? if that stat line gets those types of preseason expectations then why wasn't Trevor preseason NPOY averaging 14PPG, 10.6 RPG and 1.5 BPG and 60%FG the prior year, i understand MSU will be a top or 4 team next year and he has a lot of potential but come on, he maybe isn't even the best on his team, i agree with the other picks but would replace Payne with maybe Julius Randle because of how good Kentucky will be next year and he should be their best player since he is their #1 recruit, but UK will be so loaded next year that his teammates might steal some votes from him

While I understand he is likely the best player in the country i just think a preseason all American list should be those weve actually seen compete in the arena.... I think they do freshman all american lists dont they ?

We probably wouldn't be playing Florida State then.

I realize you might just be joking, but in case you're not, I believe the Big Ten/ACC match ups were made before Andrew Wiggins made his decision.

I don't think so. At least I've never heard of one before.

Blue Ribbon very rarely puts Frosh on 1st team A.A. Last season no freshman made any of their 4 preseason AA teams.

Really thanks for the heads up...we all thought that preseason predictions were in fact analogous to post season awards. Geez!

Is there a Pabst Blue Ribbon All American team? :D

Not sure, but if there is I'm sure Dr.Don is on it.

Numero Uno on the list. Any others on the list can't hold a candle to #1.

I'm even on the Mid July Car Trunk Warm Blatz Light A.A. list.

Haha you sound pretty upset. I know people who think of pre season all-american or pre season all-conference lists as actual awards, and judging by what the person I quoted said, it seemed like they might too. All I was saying is my interpretation is that it isn't an award and they aren't saying that those players ARE the best right now or that they've ALREADY earned that spot, but rather that they're predicting that they're the most likely players to earn that spot later. It's the difference of having earned something already versus possibly earning it later. Apparently that's a sensitive subject for you for some reason?

Not sure if im correct on this but wasnt harrison barnes the first ever pre season all american freshman.....and anyone that didnt put wiggins on their list hasnt watched him play. Russ smith shoots too much and is out of control sometimes. I dont see him having as good of a year without siva and dieng although louisville does have some great coaching blood..... Not a chance payne makes it.....dont get me wronig hes a good player but not great...i know gordan and randle and both fresh and technically pf but i think they've got a better chance (not even counting mcgary) .....seems to me it wont be long till C position is eliminated and it will be pg, 2 wings and 2 fowards

IMO, McDermott and Smart are no-brainers & have earned it with their past performances in college. On potential alone, would probably have Wiggins in there, too.

Need to see a lot more from Smith and Payne (both very good players) before I'd consider them 1st-team caliber. I'd take Gary Harris over his teammate (Payne) or Smith (plays too recklessly) in terms of having the best chance to be a 1st-teamer.

Yeah, I think Payne is an odd choice for 1st team AA. I guess they wanted to pick someone to help explain a likely lofty preseason ranking of MSU.

Smith is kind of in the same boat as Payne - a very good player on an especially good team - they must be banking on the notoriety of the team helping carry the player to 1st team AA, but usually it doesn't end up like that. Did Louisville have any 1st team AA's last year? Doubtful.

The kid is widely acknowledged to be the best prep prospect since LeBron, so it's not surprising that someone with that talent and rep would automatically leapfrog older players to be considered as one of the projected Top 5 college players in the country, regardless if he's played a single minute or not.

I thought Payne was incredibly overrated last year. They managed to top it.

Picking 5 preseason All Americans is like picking the 5 most gorgeous SI Swimsuit Women.
