per Bloomberg:
The University of Louisville men’s basketball team is No. 17 in the Associated Press poll. Rick Pitino’s Cardinals are No. 1 in categories that matter even more to the man overseeing the athletic department: revenue and profit.
“The fan base is just something like I’ve never seen before,” said Athletic Director Tom Jurich, a former National Football League player who joined Louisville in 1997. “That’s the start of it.”
According to the school’s annual report to the U.S. Department of Education the men’s hoops program generated $40.6 million in revenue during fiscal 2014, about $11 million more than No. 2 Syracuse University and $16.9 million more than John Calipari’s top-ranked and undefeated Kentucky, which was fifth in revenue.
Buoyed by donations Louisville reaped $24.2 million in profit, $6.5 million more than No. 2 Arizona and more than double all but five of the 350-or-so Division I basketball programs. Kentucky’s $7.5 million profit ranked 16th.
