Blake missed every shot

This guy can no longer shoot. He looked good as a freshman and he has digressed. His three point shooting is pretty much his whole game and if he can no longer shoot, he should sit. I was not impressed with Bostick last year, but he's probably an upgrade over Blake. Even Bryant Allen could probably shoot better.

I haven't given up on Blake but he should sit and prove himself in practice and garbage time before he gets regular rotation minutes.

To bad for us our Junior and Senior backcourt misbehaved and Blake was exposed in the first half. 20 minutes in one half for Hoffbarber should only happen if you are playing in the Summit League. Cost us 9 points.

Who was wearing Blake's uniform the first 4 games, hitting 42% of his 3-pt FGA then?

Blake is shooting under 30% now. His shooting percentage is now 29%

Yeah...but who were we playing? The fact is, Blake is not a Tubby-type player, his shooting touch has been ruined under him. Would someone take a look at the team's shooting percentages, has everyones FGP gone down under Tubby or just Hoffarber.

0-4 isn't really a bad shooting night...he missed 4 shots?!

He's still shooting 6% better than Joseph from 3, and double Nolen's percentage. He doesn't turn the ball over, and makes smart decisions with his passing. Steve Lavin even noted what he's brought to the team this tourney with his all-around game and passing, and said he'd like him on his team as a coach.

Granted, it'd be nice if he hit a few more this game, but you guys act like one game should decide an entire season. He has the fewest turnovers on the team, averages the most rebounds for any of the guards, can get the ball into the post, and make the right pass when needed.

Regarding his defense, he wasn't guarding either of the guys that were hitting the 3's in this game. If you have DVR, go back and look. It was Carter that lost his guy over 4 times in the first half when he hit a 3, Joseph lost his 2 times, and the other jumpers were the posts that Sampson wasn't getting out on off of the pick and pop. Hoff's defense is much improved this year.

Hoffarber has only played under Tubby.

Also, if he weren't a "Tubby type player," then why is he playing so often? You can say what you'd like about some other players being unavailable, but the fact remains that Tubby wouldn't be playing him as often as he does unless he felt Blake added something beyond his shooting.

Absolutely. If you pay attention, his game is much-improved and he adds a lot to us on the floor. It's not flashy, but it's very important and useful.

Agreed that Blake's D is much better, but unfortunately at the cost of completely losing his shooting touch. Right after Lavin was praising Blake he threw up that air-ball. I repeat he's not a Tubby-type player and is only still on the roster because of his status.

Would someone take a look at the team's shooting percentages, has everyones FGP gone down under Tubby or just Hoffarber.
Good point; look at the stats, nearly every single player has seen their shooting percentage go down over their tenure as a Gopher under Tubby. It seems that the players are getting much more hesitant to shoot, and it's affecting their game and decision-making in the process.

Wrong again; Lavin just said that tonight after Hoff made the nice one handed pass on the break. Hoff didn't have an airball tonight.

And you think Tubby cares about "status?!" Does he seem like a coach that really cares who someone is or where they came from? See former Mr Basketball and All-American Royce White. Doesn't seem like he cares about his "status."

With Westbrook sitting the first half and Blake going 0-6 for the game you are not going to win. Where do the points come from. The only consistant play I have seen are from Iverson and Johnson. Hoffarber and Joseph are key for this team. They have to be able to score consistantly.

And you contend he was recruited by Tubby, too? If Nolen and Westbrook were available he would have had some better looks today, if Royce, Bost and Mbakwe were here, he'd barely see the floor.

It would be nice to see him get back in his freshman groove. Blake has had a very nice touch, it just is not falling for him anymore for some reason.

Two of the last three games by Iverson were very encouraging, but I hardly think Colton can be labeled as the Gophers most consistent player. It's obvious that Johnson is their best player, but is uncomfortable, unable or unrecognized by his teammates/coaches as the guy who should be taking that last shot today.

My mistake, I meant Blake's missed bunny less than a minute after his comment.

Yeah, he was very political when he first came in.
He didn't run off any of Munson's players and he for sure wasn't going to cause a problem with the ESPY-winning state champ player. If you recall, his first offer came immediately to a Minnesota player who at the time was ranked #1- Chad Calcaterra (even though he turned out to be a bust), and reiterted that Royce and Rodney, as with Munson, were his top priorities for 2009- you gotta take care of the hometown supporters with homegrown players.

Meanwhile, behind closed doors, the line Tubby used at his first Gopher Elite Camp, with all of the varsity roster (including incoming Iverson and Sampson) present was:

"I need your scholarship far more than I need any of you!"

Wow. I'm sure that was the first thing Tubby said to his new team.

Are you insane?

My sanity may, or may not, be in question, but what he said in my presence and many, many others is NOT in question. OR, were you there, too, and can dispute this, and my sense of hearing, as well!!!???

he's a heady player and just had a bad 2 games...he played very well thursday night

He's a heady player and he probably wins all the HORSE contests against his teammates. However, against athletic competition he's a streak shooter with defensive liabilities. So far this year he's 9 for 31 on all shots. Again, I like the kid and he will help us win certain games. However, at this point in the season I'd rather be spending a lot of his minutes developing someone like Williams.

This team can still be really, really good but we have very real shooting issues at most of the positions. You watch these guys in warmups before the game. Normally college players just drain shot after shot in warm ups. Not these guys. Three guys that may help:Cobbs looks like he can shoot, Bostick and perhaps even Bryant Allen (shot 53% on threes last year).

...but what he said in my presence...
Interesting. So what coach/assistant/manager/trainer may you be that you were actually in the locker room with the team when Tubby addressed them before their first camp practice?

I simply can't believe the first thing Orlando Tubby Smith said to his brand new squad at Minnesota is "I need your scholarship far more than I need any of you!"

If you can actually provide us with who you may be, or how you would have heard this, it may give you some credibility, because taking your word for it is flat out unbelievable. Period.

Selective mis-reading of my quote- I never said it was the "first thing... said to his brand new squad". Tubby said this at the Gopher Elite Camp in June of 08 in a public setting with most of the roster present (no Carter, Joseph or Jamaal abu Shamala or Bostick-- as stated previously, the incoming players, Sampson, Iverson were there, as were this years' incoming players, White and Williams from the 09 class) and on the Pavilion floor with about 18 high school prospects in attendance, including the class of 2010 top MN players- Jake Thomas, Chad Calcaterra, Kevin Noreen and Cole Stefan (who were accompanied by their AAU or HS coaches and/or guardians).

And you are brain-dead or naive if you don't think that Tubby would say something like that to get his new teams' attention... D-I basketball is serious busine$$. What would be the motivation for someone to make something like this up?

I've heard Tubby say a version of that same thing.

Seems like when Hoff is not square to the basket when gets the ball or he really has to hurry his shot, he misses. When he catches it already square and has a second, he is deadly. Unfortunately, teams are not going to give him the free shot. I will say he plays hard and has improved his game, but not sure he is going to make without being able to create a shot.

Blake hustles his ass off and is the best 3-point shooter on the team. Period.

This guy can no longer shoot. /snip/

I haven't given up on Blake
Talk about a contradiction of terms. This is the classic "I told you" gambit that's worthy of Sid's column:

  • If Blake's shooting problems persist: See, I told you he could no longer shoot.
  • Or, if Blake's shooting problems turn around: I never gave up on Blake.
