When was the last time the Gophers won as underdogs of at least three touchdowns?

What was the spread on 11/6/99 @ Penn State?

1986 @ Michigan?
2000 @ OSU - it could have been 3TDs but possibly more like 14 or 17.

Hang on, let me email Brent Musburger - he probably remembers.

Hopefully this won't be a upset that is remembered the same way as the stated PSU and OSU upsets.

Good point... about the only way I could see it ranking up there is if we are talking in terms of "back when Minnesota had a football program" at some distant future date after many more 2-10 seasons. :)

Fixed it for you - beat Iowa!

I disagree, I think it should be remembered. Sure, upsetting Penn State or OSU is bigger by itself, but in context to the season, this is pretty big. When people look back on a 2 or 3 win 2010 season, it won't seem like that big a deal. But I'd like to think that down the road people could put themselves in the shoes of a 1-win team, and how much such an upset would mean.

Then again, perhaps down the road the Gophers will be so good that fans won't be able to grasp the concept of finding joy in getting a second win in a season. :)

I just hope down the road we are not using the phrase 'great upset' to describe a victory over a mediocre BigTen team in a 2-3 wins season. I'll call it a nice victory, but it doesn't ring of "great upset". The current players should be commended for continuing to play hard this season, but this isn't a win that will be remembered with the great victories of golden gopher football.

Nobody has used the phrase "great upset," and I doubt they ever will.

But it IS the biggest upset, according to the point spread, in a long, long time. Teams who are 21+ point underdogs don't win straight up very often. I'd still like to find out exactly how long - does anyone know where to find past point spreads?

Your right you did state you were talking about the spread, but I guess to me biggest and greatest are interchangeable, although not what you stated or intended.

We were 21 point underdogs when we beat Wisconsin in '94.

Biggest Upset

In 1986 the gophers were 25 point underdogs to #2 Michigan. We won 20-17 with a last minute field goal. I was in ann Arbor at the game. Ricky Foggie was a senior and Daryl Thompson was a freshman.
